In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka might not be the main character, but he is one of the core three heroes in the story. Fans definitely love Sokka, and there are many reasons for this. He’s a character that brings a lot of laughs, but he also shows a lot of character development as he ages and faces many difficult things.

However, just like the other core character from the series, Sokka has his flaws. This isn’t a bad thing as all well-written characters have strengths and weaknesses, but it does mean there are times when he’s the best character from the series as well as times when he’s the worst.

10 Worst: He could overreact

While Sokka might like to think of himself as overall being logical and not overemotional, he could be very overreactive in his own ways. He was prone to getting easily annoyed and sometimes angry.

This doesn’t make him a mean person by any means, but sometimes he really needed to take a chill pill and go with the flow.

9 Best: He learned what it means to be a leader

When the series first introduces Sokka, he’s just a young kid playing at being a soldier. While he wants to be able to defend himself and others around him, he doesn’t really know much about fighting or about leading.

Throughout the three seasons, he discovers what it means to be a leader and how it’s not all about rushing into battle. He starts to develop leadership skills including strategy, and it’s really fascinating and fulfilling to watch this journey.

8 Worst: He should have helped Katara more

One of the frustrating things about the first season of The Last Airbender is that Sokka and Katara seem to have vastly different roles in their home because of their gender.

While Sokka honestly doesn’t have to do much since there’s not much for him to protect, Katara is stuck doing the daily chores that all humans should help with. He definitely should have stepped up many times to help her with the workload.

7 Best: His common sense was helpful

While Sokka could get too frustrated with people who saw things differently than him or were too relaxed, such as the traveling bards, it was also a good thing at times that he wanted people to have common sense. When encountering people who didn’t believe in things like science, or didn’t worry about survival, he was there to offer a more grounded approach.

It was good for him to bring this perspective, and the fact that he wasn’t a bender meant that he was able to see the world in a different way than other members of Team Avatar.

6 Worst: Having feelings for Suki and Yue

This point is probably more of a problem on the side of the creators of the show than on Sokka’s, but it’s frustrating nonetheless. While Sokka and Suki meet early on and have crushes on each other, Sokka quickly falls for Yue.

Given that Suki becomes more of a main character, it makes him seem disloyal. It would have been better to just have him only be interested in Suki.

5 Best: He could be really funny

There are many characters from The Last Airbender that are funny in their own ways, but Sokka is often cited as the funniest of all. He definitely prides himself on being able to joke around and enjoy having a good time, and he brings many of the series’ best laughs.

Whether it’s drinking the cactus juice or getting stuck in the ground and promising to give up meat, the series wouldn’t have been the same without his laughs.

4 Worst: Sometimes his humor was annoying

On the other hand, as much as Sokka’s humor could be fun to watch, sometimes it was annoying. He could be a bit intense and loud, so it was mostly all about balance. Overall, the times when his personality and humor were most annoying were in season one, and he definitely matured a lot in the later seasons.

By season three there was more of a balance, but in some of the earlier episodes, there were times when Sokka just needed to tone it down a little bit.

3 Best: He really cared about doing the right thing

While characters like Aang and Katara often are talked about more for being extremely good and compassionate, Sokka is also a really good person.

He might not be as prone to hopeful speeches as Katara or have the youthful innocence of Aang, but he also risked a lot to help Aang defeat the Fire Nation. He was a caring person that wanted to make the world better.

2 Worst: He could be sexist at times

Perhaps the most annoying thing about Sokka is that he has a lot of sexist beliefs and behaviors early on. This is once again something that he learns from overtime, and he definitely isn’t like this in later seasons.

However, it was hard to like him at first when he was sexist toward Katara and then toward Suki and the other Kyoshi warriors even if it was satisfying to see him have to eat crow.

1 Best: Because he matured a lot over the seasons

The main reason why Sokka is the best character from the series is that it’s easy to see how his character changed and became better over time. He becomes more mature, calmer, and wiser in the three seasons, and it’s clear in the final battle scene when he is fighting on the airships that he’s already turned into an admirable leader.

He was still funny and likable, but he was growing up into a great young man.
