Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, co-creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, have exited the upcoming live-action adaptation of the series, citing creative differences with Netflix.

The live-action series, which was announced back in 2018, was met with much excitement. Both DiMartino and Konietzko were made executive producers and show runners, giving fans assurance that this adaptation would stay true to its source unlike others seen in the past.

On August 12, DiMartino posted an article to his personal website entitled “An open letter to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans.” Within, he announced that both he and Konietzko were leaving the project with Netflix.

“In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production,” DiMartino said. “When Bryan and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped.”

DiMartino said that leaving the project was the hardest decision he’s made throughout his professional career, but that it was necessary for his “happiness and creative integrity.”

“And who knows? Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.”

He ends the letter reassuring fans that he will still be involved with the Avatar universe and that the renewed interest and love for both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra has been very inspiring.

The exit of the show’s original creators is no doubt disappointing, especially for fans who have been craving and waiting for an honest adaptation of the original series. Morale has been low since the announcement, with many taking to social media expressing their worry about the upcoming adaptation. So while the show could still be good, with DiMartino and Konietzko gone, it’s difficult to think positive.
