Avengers What Happened To Helen Cho After Age Of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced Helen Cho in the MCU, but what happened to her after the superhero sequel? Following up the massive success of 2012’s The Avengers, Marvel Studios’ second ensemble film, released in 2015, further expanded the franchise with the arrival of new characters. That includes Vision, Wanda Maximoff, and Pietro Maximoff, as well as the secret family of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. It also debuted Helen Cho, the world-renowned geneticist who was the leader of the South Korean scientific research and development company called U-GIN.

Played by Claudia Kim, Cho was brought into the Avengers tower by Tony Stark after Hawkeye was injured during the team’s opening mission going after Baron von Strucker’s final HYDRA cell. Cho was brought in thanks to her pre-existing relationship with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as she had worked in Bruce Banner’s lab in the New York HQ. Cho was a significant player throughout the events of Age of Ultron, with the Regeneration Cradle healing Hawkeye’s injuries. With the help of Wanda, the scientist was able to break free from Ultron’s hypnosis and stopped the villain from getting a human-like body using her medical technology equipment. Later on in the film, fans see that Cho’s work gave birth to Vision.

The character survived the events of Age of Ultron and by the end of the film, she was invited to work with the Avengers at the new Avengers Facility in upstate New York after she recovered from her injuries. She agreed, joining Erik Selvig’s team. During the movie’s final montage, she’s seen touring the laboratories with Maria Hill. After that, however, the character has not made another appearance in the MCU to date. There hasn’t been any mention of her whereabouts either, even as the heroes roamed around the same headquarters in Captain America: Civil War. Given this, it’s curious what happened to her and why Marvel Studios seemingly just forgot about the character. Unlike other MCU characters who didn’t appear in either Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Cho’s fate after Thanos’ snap is also currently unknown.

Considering how pivotal she was in setting up some key moments in the MCU past Age of Ultron, there should at least have been an official word on her current whereabouts. There’s not even a mention of whether or not she was still with the Avengers when the Sokovia Accords were introduced in Civil War. Cho not only played a big part in the birth of Vision, but she also laid the foundation for Tony Stark’s nanotechnology that proved very useful in the fight against Thanos. Had it not been for her technology, there was no other way Iron Man could’ve healed himself on the heels of his fight with Thanos in Infinity War; he could’ve quite easily died during the three weeks before he was able to get proper medical attention back on Earth. Moving forward, Cho’s expertise in genetics could further advance technology in the MCU. Notably, WandaVision would’ve been a good time to bring her back as Hayward and S.W.O.R.D. worked on bringing Vision back to life, something Cho might have had expertise in.

At this point, there’s no indication that Marvel Studios will be bringing back Cho into the MCU. That doesn’t mean, however, that there’s no pathway for her to return. As seen in WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, supporting characters such as Jimmy Woo, Darcy Lewis, and Sharon Carter can still have a future with the franchise; they just need the right opportunity to be re-introduced. With a string of small and big screen projects slated for the universe, not to mention a more active push in the diversification of talent, Kim and Cho can ultimately continue this story after Avengers: Age of Ultron.
