Highly anticipated Metroidvania title Axiom Verge 2 has been delayed yet again, but developer Thomas Happ has assured fans it will launch later this year.

Axiom Verge 2 was announced at the end of 2019 and the original announcement trailer had the game set for a release in the second half of 2020. The pandemic then threw a spanner in the works and forced Axiom Verge 2 to be delayed into 2021. Unfortunately, it now seems like Happ needs a little more time with the game as Axiom Verge 2 has been delayed a second time.

Instead of the original Q1 release, the game has been pushed back to Q3, meaning we can expect a release at some point between July and September. In regards to exactly why Axiom Verge 2 has been delayed a second time, Happ explains his decision in a blog post on the official Axiom Verge 2 website:

“I could go into a long spiel about why it’s taking longer than I originally forecast, but I don’t want to get too bogged down into technical details,” says Happ. Suffice it to say that the game will be better for the additional time, and I won’t have to burn myself out crunching to hit a date that I set for myself.”

Happ then goes on to explain that he recognizes that people will be disappointed so has made the first game’s behind-the-scenes documentary permanently free as an apology. As of today, the documentary will be completely free for Steam users and will soon be available on the Epic Games Store as well. Happ has also partnered with IGN to post it on the outlet’s YouTube channel.

Thanks to Happ’s openness about development, we actually know quite a bit about Axiom Verge 2. Just like the first, Axiom Verge 2 will be a Metroidvania but will feature new environments, enemies, and a brand new main character. Happ also recently revealed in an interview that the game will be heavily inspired by games like The Legend of Zelda, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Prey.
