D&D Strixhaven Quandrix College Explained

Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos is a new Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook that adds the magical Strixhaven University from Magic: The Gathering into the D&D multiverse. The students who attend Strixhaven must choose from one of five different colleges for their second year of study, which will let them further refine their skills. Quandrix is one of the five colleges that players can choose to attend, with its students using the power of maths and science to strengthen their spells and uncover the secrets of the multiverse.

Strixhaven originated in Magic: The Gathering. As such, the five colleges each correspond to different colors of magic from that game specifically. In both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, Quandrix is connected to green and blue, which reflects Strixhaven college’s divide between substance and theory. The substance side of Quandrix is about putting one’s knowledge to practical use, by making it manifest in the real world, and even changing reality itself. The theory side of Quandrix is about the potential of magic and its place in the universe, with many students of that particular college becoming Illusionists, in order to show their theories to the world.

D&D Strixhaven has a specific background for Quandrix students, which gives the character skill proficiencies in Arcana and Nature, a tool proficiency in artisan’s tools, a language, and several spells. The hard numbers involved with being a Quandrix student mean that many will not become adventurers, as the danger involved with dungeon crawling is unnecessary for their field of study. The irony is that Quandrix students would make for effective D&D characters, as their world is defined by measurements and random numbers, and they have the keys to unlocking the secrets of reality.

D&D Strixhaven – Quandrix Is The School Of Math Magicians

D&D Strixhaven Quandrix College Explained

Quandrix is the College of Numeromancy, which was founded by a dragon named Tanazir Quandrix. The students are tasked with mastering subjects like mathematics, physics, and statistics, and combining that knowledge with magic. It’s through this information that they hope to learn the secrets of matter itself, with many Quandrix mages able to shape the world around them. Joining the deans from D&D Strixhaven’s Winterbloom college, the two Deans of Quandrix are Kianne, the Dean of Substance, and Imbraham, the Dean of Theory. Kianne has traveled the multiverse in order to see different magical phenomena with her own eyes and believes in using magic for practical reasons. Imbraham is a master of maths and believes that equations hold the key to understanding reality, and rarely leaves Strixhaven, as he’s too busy with his work.

The Quandrix campus is situated on the coast, in a green and lush area. The main building is Torus Hall, which has constantly shifting architecture. There are ever-shifting water sculptures on the campus, with the Arithmodrome being one of the most impressive. The Arithmodrome is a huge cube of water, which contains a secret chamber, where the rules of time, space, and reality no longer apply, and students can see their theories come to life. Joining the new monsters in D&D Strixhaven is the official mascot of Quandrix – the Fractal Mascot, which is a serpentine creature that is composed of equations that have been brought to life with magic.

Playing A Quandrix Student In D&D Strixhaven

Quandrix students might be the hardest of all of the Strixhaven students to put into the role of adventurers, at least on the surface. The substance Quandrix students might see fieldwork as a means of testing their theories or require some lost arcane knowledge to find the missing link in their research. The theory Quandrix students are even less likely to take up the dangerous life of an adventurer, as they have little to gain from going out and fighting monsters. The one approach players can take is using the old joke of a D&D character who unwittingly learns that they are characters in a game, and are looking for ways to prove their theory in the wild. The ability to keep calm under fire and know exactly where to aim a spell can mean the difference between life and death during a battle in D&D, which is something a Quandrix mage would excel at.
