Back To The Future: 5 Things That Aged Well (& 5 That Didn’t)

Back to the Future is a beloved classic, and while there are many things to love about this film, there are also some things that didn’t age well.

The film Back to the Future is a 1985 classic that stars Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown and Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly. Marty finds himself in both an adventure–and dilemma–of a lifetime when he’s transported via DeLorean thirty years into the past, finding trouble almost immediately after arriving in 1955.

He bumps into his parents and tracks down the Doc to help him get back to 1985. It’s no easy feat, but he manages to get his parents back together and get home all within one week. That said, here are 5 things that aged well about the movie, and 5 that didn’t.

10 Didn’t: Biff’s Friends Did Nothing To Help Lorraine

When Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) ruins Marty’s plan of having George (Crispin Glover) “rescue” Lorraine (Lea Thompson), it’s both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because Marty doesn’t have to assault his own mother, and a curse because Biff is the worst of the worst. Worse yet, Biff’s friends help him and stand off to the side, allowing Biff to take advantage of Lorraine.

They lock Marty in a trunk and look the other way while their friend commits a horrible act. What kind of friends are they for allowing Biff to do that, and what kind of human beings stand aside and allow awful things to happen the way they did? Luckily George stepped up in time, otherwise, things could’ve been much worse.

9 Did: The Music

Musician Huey Lewis hilariously plays the guy that tells Marty that his band is just “too darn loud.” The music holds up to this day, however, for a couple of reasons. First, it’s a good example of how different “The Power of Love” sounded in comparison to “Mr. Sandman”, reflecting the time differences in the two different decades.

Secondly, more and more people are listening to older music, 80s music included. “Back in Time” and “Power of Love”, both Huey Lewis And The News songs, hold up to this day. Not to mention the hints of Van Halen, Marvin Berry and the Starlighters, and Etta James sprinkled in for good measure, comprising the perfect soundtrack for a timeless movie.

8 Didn’t: The Original George And Lorraine

Back To The Future 5 Things That Aged Well (& 5 That Didnt)

In the film’s beginning, George is bullied by his supervisor, Biff, and lacks confidence. Lorraine is a severely depressed alcoholic, drained of life. The two lovebirds ended up together, but what happened between 1955 and 1985 to cause depression in Lorraine and obliviousness in George?

The two were dysfunctional in their own way, lacking affection, but they still loved each other enough to remain together all those years. Why couldn’t they be happy they had each other and their kids? Granted, after Marty returns from time-traveling, each member of his family is significantly happier and leading a better life, but it’s still sad that they couldn’t manage that before.

7 Did: The DeLorean

You don’t see many DeLoreans on the road today. Still, they’re a valued collector’s item, and they’re well-known thanks to the popularity of the Back to the Future franchise.

Even Marty couldn’t believe the Doc had built a time machine out of a DeLorean of all things, but like the Doc notes, why not build a time machine with some style? It certainly stands out, and if anyone does manage to build a time machine in the years to come, we’ll hope they’ll at least consider a DeLorean to do it, if only as an homage to Doc and Marty.

6 Didn’t: George’s Lack Of Confidence

Like Marty, we have to wonder what George did to win Lorraine’s love. Throughout the first movie, George is nervous and uncertain of himself, unwilling to go the extra mile to impress Lorraine. Not to mention he’s a bit of a creeper with the “Peeping Tom” thing. It’s only with Marty’s constant coaching, coupled with his appearance as Darth Vader with a threat to melt George’s brain, that gets George to change his mind and fight for Lorraine.

Without Marty, George and Lorraine’s romance seems highly unlikely. Perhaps something clicked for them when Lorraine’s father hit George with the car, and with Marty getting hit instead, we never saw the actual way they fell in love. Nonetheless, we still feel sorry George had such a hard time, but at least he found his confidence and got the love of his life in the end.

5 Did: The Doc

The Doc is one of our favorite movie characters in history. He’s eccentric, funny, and provides plenty of one-liners throughout the film. He has a hard time believing an actor becomes President, freaks out over 1.21 Gigowatts, and gets electrocuted by lightning trying to send Marty home. He’s funny and wacky, but he’s also a genius and good friend to Marty.

He’s an inspiration too, as he never gives up on his dream of building a time machine since envisioning it in 1955. He just shouldn’t have stolen from the Libyans to do it, but thanks to Marty’s time-traveling, the Doc lives to see another day–or better yet, the future.

4 Didn’t: Biff’s Bullying

Back To The Future 5 Things That Aged Well (& 5 That Didnt)

Biff was a jerk, and often the butt of the joke. His recurring tendency to crash into a truck carrying manure was always hilarious. Still, Biff was a big bully, and given his comedic aspect, his darker acts tend to be overlooked. For instance, he tried to take advantage of Lorraine. If not for George intervening, it could’ve been a lot worse.

Not to mention the fact that he could’ve killed Marty as he chased after him on the street with his car, trying to hit him with it. Biff’s bullying borderlines homicidal tendencies, and it still doesn’t look good to this day.

3 Did: The Culture Clashes

Back To The Future 5 Things That Aged Well (& 5 That Didnt)

It’s true that there are culture clashes, among other things, between generations. The way people are raised, in addition to how the world changes over the years, contribute to that fact. People have different ideas about different things. 1985 is definitely another world compared to 1955. Imagine, if we went back thirty years in time now, we’d be back in 1990. We’d get to see movies like Pretty Woman and Kindergarten Cop in theaters, but we’d be shaken by the differences in societal norms and technology, among other things. It’d take a moment to adjust, to say the least.

Our favorite example of cultural clashes has to be when Marty’s on stage at the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance, and remarks that though the 1955 teens aren’t ready for rock ‘n roll music, their kids will love it.

2 Didn’t: Lorraine’s Crush On Marty

Back To The Future 5 Things That Aged Well (& 5 That Didnt)

It never stops being gross to watch a movie in which a mother crushes on her future son. Granted Lorraine has no idea who Marty is, but still. This is the most disturbing part of the movie, and watching Marty go along with it (albeit for the sake of trying to get his father and mother to fall for one another) is just as painful to watch.

No wonder kissing Marty makes Lorraine feel as though she’s kissing her brother–there’s a good explanation behind it.

1 Did: The Quotability

Back to the Future isn’t short on its quotability. From “Great Scott!” to “This is heavy!”, with the fun additions of “I hate manure!” and “1.21 Gigawatts!?”, it’s never not fun to repeat them. The movie has been popular since day one, so whenever you quote the movie, pretty much everyone knows what you’re talking about. It’s hard not to love it based on the dialogue alone.

For anyone that doesn’t love this movie, whether it’s watching it or quoting it, we’ve got a line for you: “Make like a tree, and get outta here!”
