It can sometimes be hard to get the living to talk in Baldur’s Gate 3, which is why Larian Studios ensured that you can communicate with every corpse in the game, thanks to the Speak with Dead spell from Dungeons & Dragons.

In the current edition of D&D, Speak with Dead is a third level necromancy spell that allows the caster to communicate with a corpse. It doesn’t work on undead, corpses that lack a mouth, or bodies that have had the Speak with Dead spell cast on them within the past ten days. The spell allows the caster to ask the corpse five questions, with the proviso that the corpse is not magically bound to tell the truth and it can give vague answers to screw with the player. The only character classes in the Player’s Handbook that have access to this spell are bard and cleric.

The Speak with Dead spell would require a ton of work to include in a video game and most developers working on a Dungeons & Dragons title wouldn’t see the merit in using it. Larian Studios, however, saw this as a challenge. According to an update on the Steam page for Baldur’s Gate 3, the Speak with Dead spell can be used to communicate with every corpse in the game. This means that players can interrogate the spirits of enemies that they have just slain.

The Speak with Dead spell is so useful that the developers have recommended that players keep it around at all times, as they ensured that every corpse in the game has something to say.

It’s not that surprising that the developers behind Divinity: Original Sin 2 would put such an incredible amount of work into a feature that many players might not even use, or even realize exists. Speak with Dead in Dungeons & Dragons is mostly just an excuse for the DM to screw with the player, and it will be interesting to see how Larian Studios uses the spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 when it enters Early Access next month.
