When Batman and Superman fought on the big screen in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it shocked many mainstream non-comic book fans. These were two of the most beloved superheroes in DC Comics history, and they were enemies, with Batman even wanting to kill Superman at one point.

However, Batman V Superman isn’t the first time the two iconic heroes have fought, as it has happened many times in the comics for various reasons. They have battled in the mainstream world and have gone head-to-head in alternate world stories as well. While the winner and loser have often changed, Batman and Superman have been the best of friends, and that made them the most dangerous of enemies, as well.

In 2016, Zack Snyder and the DCEU brought Superman and Batman together on the big screen for the first time. In Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Superman was still trying to find his way in the world following Man of Steel but had a new villain in Lex Luthor trying to ruin him.

Batman, on the other hand, knew that Superman was an omega-level threat if he ever went bad and set out to stop him before that could happen. The two ended up teaming up in the end, but this started their relationship.

The Dark Knight Returns, which Frank Miller and Klaus Janson created, was a four-issue limited comic book series in 1986. The graphic novel also got released as a two-part animated movie series and followed an older Batman returning to action in a world that no longer wanted him.

Superman, in this series, now worked for the U.S. Government and was sent to shut down Batman, one way or another. In this fight, Superman won when he believed he killed Batman, but Bruce Wayne had a contingency plan and survived the battle to go underground and train the next generation of heroes.

8 The Dark Knight Strikes Again

Frank Miller returned with The Dark Knight Strikes Back, this time with artist Lynn Varley. This is a sequel to The Dark Knight Returns, which featured a battle between an older Batman and Superman, who was working for the government.

In this series, Batman comes out of hiding with the heroes he has been training to stage a rebellion against Lex Luthor’s dictatorial rule in the United States. Superman here is forced to work for the government, as they are holding his loved ones hostage, but by the end, he has joined Batman again.

7 Injustice: Gods Among Us

Arguably the most famous moment where Superman and Batman were enemies arrived in the storyline for Injustice: Gods Among Us. This turned out to be an alternate Earth, but it maintains its level due to sharing not only a comic book series but also video games.

In the series, Superman was tricked by Joker into killing Lois Lane, who was pregnant with his child. This sent Superman insane, and he murdered Joker in front of Batman and decided to take over the world to stop villains as a dictator, splitting the world of heroes in half.

Batman: Endgame took place in 2014, shortly after Batman Eternal. This marked the return of Joker for the first time since he disappeared after Death of the Family. This storyline starts with Batman recovering from a chemical attack by Scarecrow. However, Wonder Woman attacks him.

Batman dons armor he created if he ever needed to battle the Justice League, which is good since the rest showed up. Batman was able to subdue every member, including stopping Superman. It turned out they were infected with a form of the Joker toxin.

5 Batman: Hush

One of the most iconic Batman stories was Batman: Hush. This was a Batman comic that introduced a new villain known as Hush, whose identity was a mystery. In the series, Hush manipulates several of Batman’s rogues to attack him, keeping him from figuring out why this new villain has targeted him.

Poison Ivy was one of those villains, and she took control of Superman in Metropolis, meaning Batman had to fight Superman while trying to free his friend from her control.

4 Superman: Red Son

Superman: Red Son was another alternate Earth story. The selling point of this tale was that Superman landed in the Soviet Union as a baby instead of Kansas. He was then raised in a communist society and became Russia’s greatest hero.

While this meant that the Soviet Union never fell, the real focus on the story was whether Superman would remain a force of good, even in a place that was seen as the great evil. Batman was a rebel, trying to bring down the Soviet Union, which brought him into a fight with Superman, eventually dying as a martyr.

Superman and Batman had not met yet in the New 52, and when Darkseid started his planned invasion of Earth in Justice League, the team needed to form. Superman ended up battling Batman and Green Lantern the first time they met, and even together, the two had no chance against Superman until they agreed to stop fighting and work together.

2 Lex Luthor: Man of Steel

In 2005, Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo created a five-issue limited series that had Lex Luthor as the protagonist. This series was titled Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and revealed why Lex hated Superman so much, showing the Man of Steel as an extraterrestrial threat who looked down on the human race.

In this issue, Lex tells Batman about kryptonite and tells him that they need to be on the defensive if Superman turns on Earth. Superman shows up, destroys the kryptonite, and knocks out Batman. This convinced Batman to help Luthor by sending him scientific experiments his company had been working on.

1 Superman/Batman #78

In 2011, in the comic book Superman/Batman #78, the issue opened with Superman and Batman battling in what looked like a fight to the death. Batman leaped forward and drove what looked like a kryptonite sword into Superman’s chest. Then, it showed them in combat without kryptonite, and Superman punched off his head.

This led to more battles with more rules set into place, such as Superman can’t kill, and that is where the twist came. It was two kids debating who would win the fight and ended with Superman and Batman listening in, where Batman said he would always win.
