Kristen Stewart, star of Spencer, compares Princess Diana to Mister Rogers. Beginning her film career as a child actor, one of Stewart’s earliest roles came in David Fincher’s thriller Panic Room in 2002, which she followed up with Speak, Catch That Kid, Zathura: A Space Adventure, and Into the Wild. Stewart’s big breakout didn’t come until 2008 with her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight series, which spanned five films and grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide.

Much like her co-star Robert Pattinson, Stewart found it difficult to shake the image of her Twilight character, so she began opting for more roles in arthouse films to help rebuild her brand. After two collaborations with French filmmaker Olivier Assayas (Clouds of Sils Maria & Personal Shopper), Stewart is now partnering with Chilean director Pablo Larraín for an intriguing Princess Diana biopic, the same filmmaker behind 2016’s Jackie. Titled Spencer in reference to her maiden name, the film will follow Diana over the course of one weekend at Sandringham Estate in 1991 as she contemplates divorcing Prince Charles, played by Jack Farthing.

Spencer just had its worldwide premiere at the Venice Film Festival, followed by screenings at Telluride, and now star Kristen Stewart is opening up about her experience bringing such an iconic figure like Princess Diana to life. Per IndieWire, the actress explains that a perfect impersonation of Diana was less important than capturing the way she made others feel, which sounds reminiscent of Tom Hanks’ performance as Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Stewart went to elaborate on the connection she saw between the two icons:

She’s a huge contradiction, the weirdest combination of things that don’t necessarily go together all the time. It would’ve been easy to make her kind of perfect and it’s so fun to martyr her because she’s beautiful and just wanted people to be happy. She’s like Mister Rogers. There are certain people where you’re like, “Are you that sincere? You’re making me uncomfortable!” I was opened up by her in a way that was so striking.

Even though Stewart was more concerned with conveying an impression of the late princess rather than an impersonation, that doesn’t mean she neglected the latter part of the performance. In fact, Stewart studied Emma Corrin’s performance as Princess Diana in season 4 of The Crown to help prepare herself for the role in the film. Spencer also features performances by Sean Harris, Sally Hawkins, Amy Manson, and Timothy Spall.

Stewart’s turn as Diana has been highly anticipated ever since a trailer for Spencer revealed the first full look at her in character. Princess Diana has been portrayed in film and television perhaps more than any other real-life figure, so there was immense pressure on Stewart to live up to past portrayals by the aforementioned Emma Corrin and others like Naomi Watts. Audiences can see how Stewart’s take stacks up when Spencer releases on November 5.
