Don’t you just hate it when a game is too much fun?

Battlefield 2042 has faced quite a few issues during its first few months. Despite only launching towards the tail end of 2021, its concurrent player count quickly fell below that of the previous game in the series Battlefield 5, and has even dropped below Battlefield 1’s numbers. DICE needs to figure out how to get people back playing Battlefield 2042 and keep them there, so shutting down a mode because it was effectively too much fun seems a little odd.

DICE introduced Zombie Survival to Battlefield 2042 last week. Adding a zombie mode to any game usually goes down well, and the new survival LTM appeared to be a hit. Four human players staving off a horde of never-ending zombies for a full 60 minutes. However, less than 24 hours later, Zombie Survival had been removed and replaced with Gun Game.

The reason for switching things up was due to how much XP players of Zombie Survival were able to grind. Progression happened much faster than it does in any other mode, hence DICE removing it relatively quickly. In a follow-up to Zombie Survival’s removal, senior design director Justin Wiebe admitted the team focused too much on making it fun rather than balancing it with the rest of the game.

“I think our desire to create a fun zombies mode clouded our ability to see such a simple thing like the impact it would have on progression,” Wiebe admitted. Yes, that explanation does sort of make sense. Those playing other modes seeing Zombie Survival players sail past them in terms of progression would have been frustrating and somewhat unfair. However, it’s also an inadvertent admission that the devs are focused on making progression balanced rather than making the game fun.

If you have discovered a mode players enjoy playing, even without the ability to farm XP, then perhaps the focus should be on making the rest of the game like that rather than tweaking the mode to fit the rest of the game. DICE certainly needs to do something as two months in, and there’s a real risk Battlefield 2042 is almost done. Rumors that elements of the game will be going free-to-play in the near future have already started to circulate.
