Veteran Friday the 13th actress Adrienne King has returned to the role of Alice Hardy in a new fan film titled Jason Rising. King first played the role of Alice in the original Friday the 13th where she was only survivor of Pamela Voorhees’ murderous rampage at Camp Crystal Lake after she decapitated the antagonist in the closing moments. The film famously ended with Alice having a nightmare in which Jason attacked her in the lake. She briefly returned in Friday the 13th Part 2, which also notably saw the first arrival of Jason Voorhees in the form that he known for today (albeit without his famous hockey mask), but was presumably killed off by Jason at the start.

The Friday the 13th series proved incredibly popular throughout the 1980s and spawned nine sequels, as well as a crossover with fellow horror icon Freddie Krueger in Freddie vs. Jason, and a reboot in 2009’s Friday the 13th. Since the reboot however, the franchise has been dead in the water as studios New Line and Paramount, who co-produced the franchise, were unwilling to rescind their share of the property. That was eventually resolved, but the franchise has more recently been the subject of numerous legal battles with no confirmation of a new installment forthcoming.

Now, a new, hour-long fan film (via the Jason Rising Youtube channel) reimagines Alice as having survived the events of Part 2 and has her take the fight directly to the Voorhees family. The film sees a group of U.S Marshals and Police Officers on the trail of a trio of escaped convicts, only to discover that they have stumbled onto the grounds of Camp Crystal Lake. Finding themselves the prey of both Jason and an undead Pamela Voorhees, they soon discover that their only hope is Alice, who has a vendetta to settle with the Voorhees family. While the true Friday the 13th series may be on ice, it’s good to see that the franchise’s legacy more than lives on in the form of fan films such as Jason Rising, with filmmakers often recruiting former franchise stars such as King. Jason Rising itself is co-written by filmmaker Vincente DiSanti who also directed Never Hike Alone, a Friday the 13th fan-film which saw Thom Matthews return as Tommy Jarvis from Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, A New Beginning, and Jason Lives. Likewise, the upcoming Rose Blood will see Lar Park-Lincoln return as her character, Tina Shepard, from New Blood.

Jason Rising seems particularly interesting as it appears to cast King’s Alice in a role not entirely dissimilar to Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode from the more recent Halloween reboots. These films see Laurie fighting back against her nemesis Michael Myers and works to update the long-standing trope in slasher films of weak and passive women. If a new Friday the 13th installment does ever come to fruition, it would be more than refreshing to see it lean into this notion, with a legacy character like Alice returning in a much wiser, more experienced role.

While horror films have moved on from summer-camp slashers like Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, and their ilk, it might be time for a comeback. Friday the 13th was one of the main influences for the second installment of Leigh Janiak’s Fear Street anthology, and that proved to be one of the strongest entries, in part due to how refreshing it was to see such a classic setting return. With fan-films like Jason Rising continuing the legacy, there’s more than enough hunger for a new Friday the 13th installment and it would certainly bring something different to the genre as a whole that has been lacking for some time.
