Wolverine’s family was revealed to be murdered by Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier in an extremely shocking comic book moment.

Bucky Barnes was forced to kill many people when he was brainwashed by Hydra as the Winter Soldier. Most famously, it was revealed he killed Iron Man’s parents in Captain America: Civil War. However, Iron Man wasn’t the only Marvel hero affected by the Winter Soldier’s actions, as Wolverine’s family was also killed by a mind-controlled bucky.
In the comics, Bucky is captured by the Soviets opposed to Hydra, but still becomes the brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier. While he’s responsible for the death of Howard and Maria Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the comics, Tony Stark’s parent’s car crash was due to business competitors taking out their competition. But, the Winter Soldier is responsible for murdering the family of a Marvel hero, as he admitted to killing Wolverine’s family while he was used as a weapon.
In Wolverine (2006) by Daniel Way, Javier Saltares, Mark Texeira, J.D. Smith, and Randy Gentile, Logan grapples with previously cloudy memories becoming clearer, including his time as an experiment for Weapon X. Bucky ties into Wolverine’s memories and when he finds him, the Winter Soldier reveals he killed his wife and unborn child on orders from his superiors. Bucky recounts killing Logan’s pregnant wife Itsu in Japan. In a tragic moment after Wolverine failed a test of worthiness, he is set to leave his family until he could prove he was worthy. However, when he went to say goodbye to Itsu, he smelled blood and found her murdered.
Bucky reveals he killed Itsu to draw Wolverine out and lead him back to Madripoor. But, Wolverine didn’t follow him, instead opting to embrace his vengeance under Muramasa. Wolverine takes the news surprisingly well all things considered – as he knows how mind control can force a good person to do a bad thing. But, the fact Winter Soldier was responsible for not only the death of his wife but his unborn child as well is heartbreaking. Wolverine’s happiness and inner-peace were forever changed by the Winter Soldier.
Will the MCU ever borrow this story element when they introduce Wolverine and the X-Men? It’s possible but unlikely. Winter Soldier already had his redemption arc with the Avengers after it was revealed he killed Tony Stark’s parents while brainwashed by Hydra. To do it all over again would be somewhat redundant. But, if Marvel ever wanted to give Wolverine a reason to hunt down Bucky Barnes, they’ve got ample material to adapt.
