When is The Elder Scrolls 6 coming out? I was 11 when Skyrim launched, meaning since the last outing, I’ve wrapped up my GCSEs, powered through A-Levels, and managed to get a degree. What’s next? Kids? God, I hope not. At any rate, I’ll be as old as Esbern by the time TES 6 finally rears its apocryphal head. All the while, I’ve put around 1,500 hours into The Elder Scrolls Online. Suffice it to say, I’m itching for more TES, and Blades just ain’t cutting it. Maybe Adventures is the answer.

Adventures: Redguard bridged the gap between the more archaic Daggerfall and the ‘modern’ – now two-decade-old – Morrowind. Storywise, it didn’t. It was set 400 years before the one that started it all, Arena, and placed us in the shoes of Cyrus on the island of Stros M’Kai. ESO fans will likely recognize it. You scour the local fauna for the N’Gasta amulet to find your sister. Pretty standard stuff. Turns out, she had enlisted with the Redguard resistance, the Restless League. It’s a decent enough experience, especially when you factor in the year it came out, but Redguard shouldn’t be left behind in the ‘90s. Todd Howard and co. oughta greenlight more of these short tie-in stories to give us something to chew on while we wait for the main course – think of Adventures as a delicious appetizer.

Seeing as The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in its design phase, it’s not exactly clear just what the narrative will be – all we have to go off are a few cryptic teasers. It could be set at the same time as Skyrim, a couple of years after, or a couple hundred either way. At any rate, TES 6 talk is all speculative because there’s nothing to go off of. Still, the Adventures series could set the scene for whatever is coming. If it is in Hammerfell, then Adventures could explore the Redguard rebellion against the Thalmor. We already know what happens, so it isn’t exactly spoilerific territory and it wouldn’t be treading on the toes of TES 6 too much.

Adventures: Redguard was never envisioned as a sprawling RPG on par with the main entries. It was inspired by Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, and Ultima, an action-adventure jaunt that took us on a quick detour while the next title was in the works. I’m sure it was a bit of a shake-up after Daggerfall, but in today’s era of gaming, it’d feel right at home. We’ve just had Miles Morales, a nice dose of Insomniac Spider-Man to kickstart the next era of video games. Miles Morales came out just a couple of years after the first game, whereas we’re looking at over a decade for TES – if anything, it’s far more warranted in the case of Bethesda’s flagship series. Microsoft isn’t exactly strapped for cash, either, and it’s surely looking to make use of its costly library sooner than later. The only way it can feasibly do that at the moment is through the mobile game Blades and the MMO spin-off. Maybe it’s time to expand and give another studio the reins for Adventures.

There was another game called Legend: Battlespire. The now-defunct card game The Elder Scrolls Legends took Battlespire’s prefix, and if Battlespire’s moniker can resurface, then Adventures isn’t a far-fetched ask. Comparing the state of ‘90s Bethesda to now is hardly fair, though, and contextually, the wait between Skyrim and 2021 will no doubt already have fans watering at the mouth at the prospect of another single-player TES. I know I’d pick up an Adventures title in a heartbeat.

Maybe you’re concerned it’d detract from the already lengthy development time of TES 6 but, like how ESO isn’t handled by the main studio, neither would the spin-off be. A couple of these tie-ins could be launched by the time TES 6 is ready. What’s more, Bethesda already created spin-offs for Wolfenstein and Dishonored, so it’s not uncharted territory whatsoever. At any rate, it looks like we’ll be sitting on our thumbs for a while.
