Big Hero 6 was one of 2014’s animated treats. A joint venture between Marvel – whose comic series of the same name provided inspiration for the movie – and Disney, Big Hero 6 told the story of Hiro Hamada, who is left to deal with the tragic death of his brother and uncover a corporate conspiracy at the same time. Luckily, Hiro has his brother’s college friends to lend a hand, as well as the older Hamada sibling’s pet project: the medical assistant robot called Baymax.
The movie proved a hit with both fans and critics and although there is little sign of a big-screen sequel, a television series airing on Disney XD has been announced. The show will pick up right where the movie left off and features a star-studded voice cast featuring the likes of Jamie Chung, Scott Adsit and Ryan Potter, who will be reprising their movie roles as Go-Go Tomago, Baymax and Hiro, respectively. Khary Payton – better known as Ezekiel in The Walking Dead – also joins the cast. The series will be produced by Mark McCorkle, Bob Schooley and Nick Filippi, the team also responsible for another animated hit: Kim Possible.
While Big Hero 6 season 1 won’t be premiering until later this year, Disney XD have already confirmed that Big Hero 6: The Series will be granted a second season. Marc Buhaj – Senior VP of Programming and General Manager at Disney XD – had the following to say regarding the announcement:
“Mark, Bob and Nick have delivered a dynamic adventure series that follows the Big Hero 6 superhero team, led by audience favorites Hiro and Baymax. We are honored to have the opportunity to further expand the elaborate world and engaging characters of Big Hero 6: The Series with this early second-season order.”
The decision speaks volumes about Disney’s faith in Big Hero 6: The Series, as in the current television climate, no network would dare risk ordering a second season of a show at such an early stage if they had any serious misgivings about it. The network also perhaps realize that the original movie garnered a significant fan base and with high demand for a sequel, the series has a ready-made audience waiting to lap up further adventures of the famous six.
With any movie-to-television adaptation, it’s difficult not to be somewhat skeptical. Such projects have a tendency to lack what made their source material so popular, as evidenced by the recent Taken and School of Rock series which are just two recent additions in a long history of television shows that have disappointed upon transitioning to the small screen.
However, there’s plenty of reason to believe that Big Hero 6: The Series has the potential to buck that trend and provide fans of the original movie with a fitting and satisfying continuation. Firstly, the team involved have some serious pedigree in animation – and by tempting back a number of the film’s original cast, an air of authenticity is added to the TV adaptation. Furthermore, the movie has already established the core characters with fans and so the series can dive straight into the group’s future crime-fighting capers, without the need to get too heavily involved in backstory and the like.
