Superstar writer/artist Jeff Lemire has announced a new deal with Substack that will see him move Black Hammer and other creator-owned works to the platform. Lemire’s announcement has come on the hot on the heels of other creators, such as James Tynion IV and Chip Zdarksy, opting to release material through Substack.

Jeff Lemire is one of the most innovative and versatile creators working in comics today. He broke into the comics field in the early 2000s, working on various creator-owned titles for small publishers; he would hit it big with the autobiographical Essex County in 2009. The book was a hit with critics and was nominated (and won) several awards, including the Joe Shuster Award. Lemire then created the hit Sweet Tooth for DC/Vertigo, which led to work on their line of superhero titles, including Superboy, Animal Man, and Green Arrow. Lemire also worked on titles for Marvel and Valiant, including All-New Hawkeye, Thanos, and Bloodshot Reborn. Lemire also created Black Hammer, a revisionist superhero book. Recently, Lemire has pivoted back to creator-owned material, such as Mazebook for Dark Horse and Primordial for Image. Now, Lemire has announced he will be creating new comics for Substack, starting with his new magnum opus Fishflies!

An article on Comics Beat laid out the specifics. One of the first projects announced is Fishflies, a new graphic novel that Lemire feels will go over 500 pages; he will release new pages for the book every week, allowing fans to see Fishflies grow and develop in an organic way. Lemire will also publish new Black Hammer related material on Substack, including new short stories as well as a new Colonel Weird comic, written by Lemire and Tate Brombal with painted art by Ray Fawkes. Fans will also be treated to rare materials from Lemire, such as sketches and scripts. Finally, Lemire, along with Cadence Comic Art (who sells Lemire’s art) will partner with Dark Horse to sell prints and handle commissions.

A large number of creators have announced new projects on the Substack platform over the past month; Jeff Lemire has now joined their ranks. Substack allows creators to provide fans more than simply new comics; there are opportunities to provide fans next-level experiences and Jeff Lemire is doing just that. Not only will fans be able to watch Fishflies develop in real-time, but they will have unprecedented access to Lemire’s archives and be able to purchase original art as well.

Jeff Lemire is one of the medium’s best creators. Moving Black Hammer and his other creator-owned material to Substack shows just how much the industry is changing with so many prominent creators taking matters into their own hands.
