While people are clamoring over the new PS5 and the Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo’s console/portable device has held steady since its launch in March of 2017. Apparently, it’s been doing so well for Nintendo, that the President of Nintendo of America is on record as saying the Switch is only half-way through its lifespan.

That’s not surprising, given that the Nintendo Switch outsold the hugely popular PS5. Not only that, the humble little Switch—with far less processing power and none of the gimmicks of PS5—but it did so during the PS5’s first month on the market. As if that weren’t enough of an accolade, the Nintendo Switch is on track to have the best year for a console since the Xbox 360 in 2010.

During an interview with Polygon, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser stated that the Nintendo Switch is not getting a “pro” version and that the console is at the midpoint of its life. Bowser cited the Switch’s strong sales performance (it was the best-selling console for 24 consecutive months) and its ability to bring in gamers from all different backgrounds as the reason that Nintendo isn’t going to release a new console any time soon.

Bowser was asked about whether or not Nintendo thought the hardware of the Switch was going to be a problem and if the company would stick to its, “long-held strategy of updating the hardware after, let’s say, three or four years.” Bowser responded by saying that the company is always looking at technological developments and whether those developments can, “enhance and improve the gameplay experience.”

However, the strong sales of the Switch have indicated that Nintendo is on the right path. Bowser goes on to say that it’s the symbiotic relationship between the console and the way that games are developed for it that is making the Switch so successful. As such, Nintendo is going to continue to lean into that relationship and work to develop and perfect the experience before another console is released.
