With the highly-awaited Black Widow film, Natasha Romanoff got the solo Marvel Studios film that her diehard fans had wished for her from the beginning. Along with a deeper exploration of her past and origins, the movie gave the gift of Yelena Belova to the world: Natasha’s sister was whip-smart, deadly, and just the right amount of sassy.

Florence Pugh’s role of Yelena in Black Widow was almost unanimously appreciated, mainly because of her nuanced acting as both a dangerous killer and a hurt child, but citizens of the Reddit-verse had some less than accepted opinions about the greatest child assassin.

8 Yelena Fighting Nat Made No Sense

The first encounter that Yelena had with her sister involved a lethal brawl between the two, which led to the destruction of most of her apartment. Some Redditors like bleueueueueueu weren’t convinced: “I agree, this was such a fun fight scene to watch. I was really confused why they were fighting though. like yelena knew it was natasha and pretty much sent for her but they still fought anyway?”

However, the latent love and overt resentment that the two had for each other, especially Yelena for feeling abandoned by Natasha, came to the forefront of this scene very well. The fight was very messy – as sisterly clashes are – and Yelena was quite obviously the younger sister who couldn’t stop attacking while being held down by Nat.

7 She Should Kill Clint

The post credits scene in the latest Marvel movie piqued audience interest for a Yelena movie, and an appearance in Hawkeye-centric material too. In true Reddit fashion, caro_131 wants an unusual outcome: that Yelena should butcher Clint. They say “That post credits scene has me waiting for a yelena movie. I need one, and honestly.. I wouldn’t be too angry if she killed clint.”

Natasha shared a close relationship with Clint, and Avengers: Endgame watchers know that he didn’t kill her, but was rather comforting company in her last moments. The overarching sentiment is that Yelena learns of the deception and spares Natasha’s close friend, along with learning about the true sacrifice Nat made.

6 She Should Not Be The New Black Widow

Yelena is the topmost contender for becoming the new Black Widow, which is a notion welcomed by fans of the MCU, but UmbrusNightshade thinks there is no need for a new Widow, “It is extremely lazy to force in a new Hawkeye and new Black Widow; Marvel is very derivative and unoriginal in a lot of ways. It would make more sense for Yelena to be a double agent and eventually betray the Avengers.”

There is something sensible as well as sentimental for Yelena to carry forward her sister’s legacy, and she seemed to want redemption for her kills under the Red Room’s influence, which could be done as a superhero. The people want to see Yelena again, and not as a negative double-agent who will be forgotten in the large bevy of Marvel villains.

5 She Could Be The Evil Widow

While it has been confirmed that Yelena would be Natasha’s successor as Black Widow, there are some fans on Reddit like anoninsdca who see Yelena’s future as the evil counterpart to the Widow. They speculate “Anyone else think that Yelena is found to be the “bad” or evil black widow that everyone has been talking about?”

Kevin Feige has assured fans that Yelena will carry Nat’s legacy forward, but will pave her own unique path and do it on her own terms. There is a lot of mystery shrouded around what her character will do next, but it’s certain that she will appear on the Disney+ Hawkeye series.

4 Surviving The Car Crash Was Unrealistic

In Black Widow, Yelena and Nat are seen in a high octane car chase through the streets of Budapest, and it ends with their BMW flipping over several times, and screeching into a subway station, upside down. FrostedKnight96 from Reddit thought that the fact they survived, let alone were capable of walking, was unrealistic: “Natasha and Yelena, despite not being a superhuman, surviving a car crash after the car flipped multiple times which ruined the the entire vehicle? That’s way over-the-top, it took me out from the experience of diving into the story.”

Yelena was not entirely unscathed when she emerged from the wreckage, as, in fact, there was a trail of blood she left after her to mislead the Taskmaster. The crash was fatal, but as Widows, both Yelena and Natasha were probably taught how to best rearrange their bodies so the damage is minimal.

3 There Is No Way Yelena And Nat Weren’t Detected After The Helicopter Crash

Since Dreykov’s network was worldwide, and Yelena was an ex-member and wanted fugitive of the Red Room which birthed Black Widow, some Redditors like writerwriterartist are astounded that Yelena’s thunderous landing of the helicopter didn’t draw attention instantly. They said “Such a good moment. But like other posters said too – would they not be detected? Especially wearing their white uniforms, walking through the countryside?”

The reason why they weren’t detected was most likely because Melina lived close to where they crashed, and she was their primary informant of the area – a duty which she carried out when she reported Yelena, Nat, and Alexei to the Red Room.

2 Her Laughing Off The Avalanche Was Inhuman

Right before the helicopter crash, Yelena carried out a daring rescue mission where she picked up the Red Guardian from the prison he was locked up in. Her use of ammunition caused an avalanche to descend on the prison, and some fans like mrminutehand found her brushing off the destruction unacceptable: “As the prison is destroyed, Yelena laughs it off with a quip and we never talk about it again. So… that was it, I’m assuming everyone in the prison and their dogs just died, and it doesn’t matter?”

While this may have soured the later tragedies and emotional moments for mrminutehand, it’s important to remember that Yelena was a trained killer, who had most likely been desensitized to death. She had spent her whole life around murder and torture, so it only fits her character that she would laugh this off.

1 Yelena Should Have Got Blipped

This Redditor casts his net into the future after the Black Widow film, and hopes that Yelena got blipped after Thanos’ Snap. Ratcliffeb says “If Yelena got blipped it would make what Natasha did in End Game even more emotionally impactful upon re-watch. For five years she continued to search for a way to not only bring everyone back, but a way to bring her little sister back.”

Yelena’s, or even Melina’s and Red Guardian’s future is uncertain and not revealed by MCU yet, so it’s not possible to know what motivated Natasha to sacrifice herself on Vormir or whether Yelena disappeared with the others. However, Natasha’s actions would not be any less noble if she did it for half of the world, instead of just for a personal motive. In a way, putting the Yelena spin devalues her morals and motivation behind giving up her life to bring people back.
