Black Widow’s opening weekend seems to have gone pretty well for Disney. Not only has the film broken the $100 million gross barrier that seems to have been in place since the start of the pandemic, but it’s also unseated Fast and Furious 9 as the biggest movie of 2021 so far.

We’re getting our numbers from Box Office Mojo, which are just estimates until the massive media conglomerates confirm the numbers, but they’re painting a pretty rosy picture for Black Widow. How rosy? How’s $80 million domestically and $78 million internationally grab you? Sure, it’s no Titanic, but that’s still a lot of cash and likely enough to make back the production costs on the film.

Compare that to F9, which opened to $70 million domestically on its opening weekend, and you’ve got a new box office queen.

Black Widow premiered on 4,160 big screens across North America last Friday, which was actually a few less than F9’s 4,200ish. However, Disney also premiered Black Widow on Disney+ which added millions of smaller screens to its opening weekend. Unlike most other Disney+ premieres, Disney actually revealed some stats for Black Widow’s streaming release which added an extra $60 million to Disney’s box office take.

“Black Widow’s strong performance this weekend affirms our flexible distribution strategy of making franchise films available in theaters for a true cinematic experience and, as COVID concerns continue globally, providing choice to consumers who prefer to watch at home on Disney+,” said Disney media and entertainment distribution chairman Kareem Daniel in a statement.

F9 is still far ahead in its gross valuation, which so far has been $140 million domestically and just over $400 million internationally, but there’s every indication that Black Widow will catch up and even surpass F9.

I’d say family isn’t everything, but Black Widow is ultimately a movie about family, so I guess Dom gets the last laugh after all.
