Black Widow’s Taskmaster may have been the first MCU character recruited by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss). In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the mysterious new character set her sights on Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, who she appears to have big plans for in the MCU.

After expressing support for his decision to kill the Flag-Smasher in episode 5, Val returned in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale to provide Walker with his “U.S. Agent” superhero name and costume from Marvel Comics. Exactly what she wants from him wasn’t made clear, but she did say that he – and not Sam Wilson’s Captain America – will be needed when “things get weird”. Based on their interactions, it’s being assumed that U.S. Agent has just been recruited for a brand-new MCU team, with the two most likely options being the Thunderbolts or the Dark Avengers. Whichever organization Marvel is building toward in Phase 4, it may be Val who’s running the show.

The presumption is that U.S. Agent filled the first spot on the roster, but it could be that Val began work on assembling the team long before she met Walker. After her surprising cameo occurred in episode 5, it was reported that Dreyfus was originally supposed to make her first MCU appearance in Black Widow (a movie set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War). However, delays stopped that from happening. If that report is accurate, then it appears that Val was involved in some way with Black Widow’s adventure. One possible explanation for her presence in the movie is that it was linked to the same reason she was in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Val seems to have an interest in getting people on her side, so she could have been after one of Black Widow’s supporting characters. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) is an option, but perhaps an even better one would be Taskmaster.

Regardless of what team Val is in the process of creating, Taskmaster would make for a valuable asset. As a character whose power is that he can copy any move he sees, there’s so much he’d be able to accomplish for her. He already has access to a number of talents possessed by some of the MCU’s most skilled heroes. Taskmaster is one of the most formidable fighters in Marvel Comics, as made evident by the struggles he’s given characters like Captain America and Spider-Man. It’s likely that the same is true about the physical prowess of his MCU counterpart.

If Black Widow’s original Val plan didn’t change and Taskmaster does survive his fight with Natasha (Scarlet Johannsson), his story could end with him being paid a visit by Val, possibly in a post-credits scene set a few years later. If he accepts her offer, he may reappear in a future MCU project alongside U.S. Agent, with both characters serving as members of an elite squad of anti-heroes.
