Supernatural: 5 Reasons Dean Should Die In The Finale (& 5 Both Winchesters Should Die)

It’s likely that Supernatural will kill off one of the Winchester brothers in the end, but should it be Dean, or should Sam and Dean die in the finale

From killing some of the most bizarre monsters to fighting angels, demons, Lucifer, Darkness and now God himself, the brothers have been through a lot. They have, in the process, ended up losing their family, most of their friends and even died a number of times themselves.

Now, that is where it gets tricky. The show has consistently shown that coming back from the dead is like taking a walk in the park. Every time somebody died, they were brought back either through some demon deal, or with the help of angels, or God himself resurrected them. How, then, does the show end?

Assuming that one or both of the brothers die, let us see why Dean Winchester dying would be a fitting ending to this long-running CW show, or why the death of both the brothers could be more poetic.

10 Why Dean: Dean Is All About Family

Since the day we were introduced to the boys, we knew that Dean was all about the family, while Sam was the little rebel brother. Dean was the loyal son, good at following his dad’s orders and clearly wishing to follow into his footsteps.

From the beginning, we were told that John Winchester had entrusted Dean with the care of his brother. In fact, all the time that John had disappeared looking for the thing that killed his wife, it was a young Dean who had looked after Sam. It makes sense then if he doesn’t stop now. He would give his life if that would save Sam.

9 Why Both: Dean Would Never Let Sam Die Alone

Following on from the last point, since Dean is deeply attached to his younger brother, and considers him his responsibility, there is little chance of him surviving if Sam doesn’t.

Both the brothers dying, although a heartbreaking prospect, seems very likely since Dean would not let Sam die, and in case something happened to him, he would go berserk and probably get himself killed too.

8 Why Dean: Dean Resurrected His Brother

Supernatural 5 Reasons Dean Should Die In The Finale (& 5 Both Winchesters Should Die)

To be honest, it was John Winchester who started this whole trading lives thing, when he offered his own life in exchange for Dean’s. But between the brothers, it was Dean who made the deal with the crossroads demon. In season 2, Sam gets stabbed in the back and, well, dies. But Dean refuses to bury him. Heck, he is ready to let the world end because he thinks he has lost his brother forever.

It is at this time that Dean makes the deal with the crossroads demon to bring Sam back from the dead. In exchange, he is given one year to live. And he accepts it! So, in case Sam dies by the end of the show, there is every possibility that Dean will bring him back again, and the cycle will continue. So, for the show to seriously end, Dean had better go, rather than Sam.

7 Why Both: Too Much History of Resurrection

The show has had too much history of resurrection, one way or the other. Ever since it got a thumbs up to continue past season 5, which was the originally planned finale, people have been brought back from the dead, left, right and center.

If there is one thing we know with any finality on this show, that is that death isn’t final.

The makers have explored what is hopefully every possible way of resurrecting humans, angels, and demons. Now, for the show to truly end, and if death is a way out, then both the brothers have to go, at least to ensure that one of them is not able to bring the other back again. If both die, the chances for resurrection are considerably lower, although they still exist.

6 Why Dean: The Older Brother’s Death Would Be Poetic Justice

Dean is the older brother and ever since they were both kids, he had taken it upon himself to look out for his little brother. He is his brother’s keeper. While Sam loves his brother very deeply, it is Dean’s love for his young brother that has been one of the core themes of a lot of the episodes ever since the start of the series.

In fact, the unhealthy extremes to which the brothers would go for each other has been one of the chief underlying motifs. Somehow, having Dean die while trying to save his brother one last time seems like perfect poetic justice.

5 Why Both: Both May Die To Save Each Other

Let us not ignore Sam Winchester altogether, He might be more layered than Dean as a character but his love for his brother is well established. He would never take it lying down if something happened to Dean, and especially if Dean died in order to save Sam in the first place.

This means that ideally, as canon goes, Sam should either try to bring Dean back or if there is no time for that, then he will seek revenge and maybe die in the process. Better still, they go out trying to save each other.

4 Why Dean: Audience Would Probably Go Bonkers If Dean Died

It’s possible that having Dean die might rake in more TRPs. It might be because of actor Jensen Ackles, but Dean’s wit and charisma and the fact that fans literally drool over him, probably makes him a better candidate for a tragic death. That’s depressing, yes. But that’s how TRPs roll in.

Sam, especially when he turns on his brooding looks, is no less adorable. So it’s hard to tell whose death would be tougher on the audience but somehow, Dean dying in Sam’s arms seems like a compelling image.

3 Why Both: Turn On The Tear Tap

Supernatural 5 Reasons Dean Should Die In The Finale (& 5 Both Winchesters Should Die)

Supernatural has always been dark and although generously sprinkled with humor, there has always been the indication that entities of apocalyptic proportions are in play and that the boys are destined to fight them, very possibly fated to die as such.

Imagine an ending where both the brothers end up dead! Life has been hard for them, to say the least, and all that keeps them going is fighting monsters– the family business. Over the past many seasons, the monster of the day —while very much there—has given way to bigger, much more epic concerns. There will be poetic justice all around if Dean and Sam both lay down their lives for what they believe in. Way to turn on the tear tap!

2 Why Dean: Dean Is Likely To Go Out All Guns Blazing

Supernatural 5 Reasons Dean Should Die In The Finale (& 5 Both Winchesters Should Die)

Between Sam and Dean, Dean is the one who is more likely to turn Rambo and face his enemies all guns blazing. He was never the one to think things through or strategize.

It was Sam, who kept his brother grounded in this way, being the more intellectual of the two. He would read and research ways of addressing any danger—whether it was a chupacabra or the devil himself— before he charged in. Being the more reckless of the brothers, Dean seems far more likely to go out with a bang.

1 Why Both: A Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid Ending

Will the boys finally get their Butch and Sundance ending? Actor Jared Padalecki who plays Sam Winchester noted that he would not mind the brothers going out in a blaze of glory, and that does sound like an ideal way to end the series.

Whether any or both the brothers die or not, death has always been a running motif on this cult show and the image of the brothers charging ahead in one end-of-the-world fight seems like a pretty heroic way to end it all.
