Jumping into the mainstream with their record-breaking indie title Paranormal Activity, Blumhouse proved themselves a formidable force in the horror film industry. By making one high-grossing success after another—think Insidious, Get Out, or even The Purge—they slowly reinvented the horror film and became a household name.

They’ve made so many movies it’s hard to count, and, because of this, they’ve definitely had their fair share of hits and misses. For instance, some of their films have earned heavy critical praise and even become classics, as evidenced by their super-high ratings on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes’ patented Tomatometer. Unfortunately, others just weren’t as great, leading to low Tomatometer scores.

10 Hush (2016) – 92%

Blumhouse’s 2016 horror film Hush follows traditional slasher tropes for the most part in that it’s about a woman fighting to survive against a masked killer. The twist, however, is that the woman is a deaf-mute, having lost her abilities to hear and speak as a teenager.

Critics praised Hush’s plot, directing, and atmosphere; currently, the film has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

9 The Boy Next Door (2015) – 11%

The 2015 psychological horror film The Boy Next Door stars Jennifer Lopez as a woman whose neighbor becomes infatuated with her, to increasingly dangerous levels.

Despite many critics praising Lopez’s solid performance, they couldn’t see beyond the cheap, popcorn-thriller scares and clunky storyline. The Boy Next Door currently has a truly terrible 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

8 The Gift (2015) – 92%

2015’s The Gift is a psychological horror film following Simon and Robyn Callem, whose lives are turned upside down by the sudden reappearance of one of Simon’s childhood classmates.

The film received critical acclaim for its plot, directing, and casting, with particular praise being dealt toward its refusal to rely on horror tropes to make up its storyline. On the flip side, however, its controversial ending left some viewers understandably upset. Regardless, the film currently holds a quite good 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

7 Martyrs (2015) – 9%

A remake of the controversial 2008 French horror film of the same name, 2015’s Martyrs follows Lucie Jurin, a woman who tracks down the cult that tortured her as a child.

Many critics saw the film as less violent than its predecessor, but, other than that, it was basically a shot-for-shot remake. This didn’t bode well, as the heavy violence was what gave the original its distinctiveness. The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 9%.

6 Cam (2016) – 93%

Blumhouse’s 2018 horror-thriller Cam follows cam girl Alice Ackerman, who finds her streaming “rank” challenged by a menacing doppelganger. The techno-thriller received high marks from critics for its acting, directing, and suspenseful tone. It currently holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

5 Fantasy Island (2020) – 8%

A horror revamp of the classic television series of the same name, 2020’s Fantasy Island focuses on five people who win a Wonka-esque contest to visit the titular island where dreams come true only to find out the island brings nightmares to life, as well.

Despite the film’s interesting premise, critics said its plot was scattershot, and the dialogue was wooden. Because of these criticisms, among many others, the film ended up with a dreadful 8% Rotten Tomatoes score.

4 Get Out (2018) – 98%

Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, 2017’s Get Out, showed fans of his comedy work that he could also venture into the horror genre. The film follows Chris Washington, a young black man who discovers a terrifying secret while meeting his girlfriend’s family.

Needless to say, the film became an instant hit and was praised by critics for its directing, acting, plot, characters, and themes. It currently holds a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

3 Ouija (2014) – 6%

In partnership with Hasbro, the owners of the Ouija trademark, Blumhouse in 2014 released the supernatural horror film Ouija, about a woman who opens a portal to the spiritual realm with the titular supernatural board.

The film received almost universally negative reviews, with criticism directed at its story, characters, and directing, and it currently has a rating of just 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, the film’s prequel, 2016’s Ouija: Origin of Evil, received an 83% rating, becoming one of Blumhouse’s best-rated films to date.

2 Creep 2 (2017) – 100%

2017’s Creep 2 follows Sara, a college student who runs a YouTube channel where she films her often bizarre meetings with strangers found through Craigslist. After she runs into the mysterious “Aaron,” however, her run-of-the-mill interview turns into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

Like its predecessor, the film received mostly positive reviews from critics for its writing, acting, and atmosphere, and it’s currently one of the few films to have a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel is in development with an unknown release date.

1 The Darkness (2016) – 3%

The 2016 indie horror film The Darkness—which was produced by Blumhouse—follows the Taylor family, as they come back from their sightseeing vacation to the Grand Canyon with a possessed souvenir in tow.

The film was critically panned as being a boring, trope-heavy experience, and its current Rotten Tomatoes rating, a mere 3%, reflects the abysmal nature of its reviews.
