Bob Odenkirk thinks Aaron Paul should portray Jesse Pinkman on Better Call Saul. The spinoff show is no longer in the shadow of Breaking Bad, but fans still enjoy seeing connections between the two. Vince Gilligan and the creative team definitely have not been shy about including Breaking Bad references in Saul, but the one mandate is that they are natural to the story (as opposed to being empty fan service). By the time the story of Walter White picked up, Mike Ehrmantraut was already working with Gus Fring, so it makes sense to see the origins of their partnership on Saul.
Viewers are understanding, and the critical reception to Better Call Saul illustrates Gilligan’s approach is correct. That being said, one thing everyone is eager to find out is if Saul’s two most famous clients will ever make an appearance on the series. There have been conversations about it before, but nothing has come into fruition. But before Saul bows off the air, Odenkirk would like to see how Jesse met Saul.

Screen Rant was able to attend a Better Call Saul press conference at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, where Odenkirk was asked if he thinks we’ll see Paul on the show:
“I don’t see how we don’t. Here’s what I know. I know that Hank Schrader knows Saul. When they meet in the hallway, they give each other shit and they know each other. If you remember the first time. So, Hank knows Saul. And I think because of what Jesse says to Walt, “you don’t need a criminal lawyer, you need a CRIMINAL lawyer.” Obviously, Jesse saw Saul’s commercial on Breaking Bad. We know that. But I don’t think that’s enough for Jesse to recommend they go to Saul. It’s just a commercial. He knew Saul and Saul’s reputation, so I think those two should meet.”
Odenkirk makes a solid point. When Badger was arrested on Breaking Bad, Jesse knew immediately where to go. It wouldn’t be out of the question for him to have some run-ins with Saul – especially given his history. Unfortunately, it won’t be happening this year, as it’s already been confirmed Bryan Cranston and Paul will not appear in season 4. Plus, in the current Saul timeline, Jimmy is under a one-year suspension and probably won’t be taking on too many clients in this next batch of episodes. Perhaps in a future season, after Jimmy has made the complete transition into Saul Goodman, Pinkman can come back for either a cameo or a small arc. The trick, as always, is finding a way to make it work organically.
If Paul does come back at some point, it’ll be interesting to see how they pull it off. Much time has passed since Paul was introduced to audiences as Jesse (who is roughly 24 years old in Breaking Bad’s pilot episode), and a decade later, it might be a stretch to try to sell him as an even younger version of the character. Of course, there are ways to accomplish it, such as digital de-aging or practical makeup, so it isn’t entirely out of the question. Hopefully, Gilligan finds a spot for Jesse at some point, as it would be fun to see him again.
