Despite many rumors suggesting that Princess Zelda would be included as a playable character in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, the latest trailer from Nintendo’s presentation at E3 suggests that Link will be the sole main character. Nintendo confirmed during the live stream that it is aiming to launch Breath of the Wild 2 in 2022 and also showcased some new features and gameplay mechanics, such as the ability to explore the skies above Hyrule. Link can seemingly also now teleport short distances and use a variety of additional items.

The original reveal for Breath of the Wild 2 featured Link and Zelda exploring what looked like a cave. The pair descended into the structure before discovering what appeared to be the corpse of Ganondorf. The fact that Zelda looked to be playing a more important role in the story led to discussions about whether she would be included as a playable character. Ever since there have been persistent rumors that Nintendo would allow players to use Zelda during gameplay.

The latest teaser trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 seemingly debunks rumors that fans would be able to play as Princess Zelda in the Nintendo Switch sequel. Throughout the footage, which shows Link flying through the air and using new gameplay mechanics, Zelda is noticeably missing from the action. While there is a mysterious figure featured for a brief moment, it does not appear to be a female protagonist. The lack of any mention of Zelda in the latest video suggests that Link will be the only playable character in the open-world game.

The year 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise and fans have been expecting big announcements about the series, especially considering the celebrations that accompanied the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. last year. Nintendo has already revealed a remake of Skyward Sword, bring the former Wii U game to a wider audience with updated visuals. The HD version of the title will launch for Nintendo Switch on July 16, 2021.

Fans have long been asking to be able to play as Princess Zelda in future games and the first trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 only fanned those flames by including the character so heavily in the footage. But this latest trailer doesn’t give any indication that Zelda will be playable. This will almost certainly disappoint many fans of the series who wanted to be able to switch up the perspective.
