While many players prefer to ignore Pokémon Contests in favor of pursuing catching all of the Pokémon or quickly working their way through the story, Pokémon Contests are a fun diversion. There are plenty of tips and tricks to adhere to when looking to become a top Coordinator in the games, though some might be more obvious than others.

10 Hearthome Once Again Opens Up Its Doors For Pokémon Contests, But The Experience Is Different

Pokémon Contests are once again in the Sinnoh games with them being introduced when the player arrives in Hearthome City. Fantina, the city’s Gym Leader isn’t available for a battle until later in the game, so the player can either proceed with the story or turn their attention to Pokémon Contests.

While Pokémon Contests are still a welcome change of pace, they have had the likes of the Dress Up category and the thrill of finding the Dress Up Items removed, with no visible judges, which can be deemed as disappointing for those who were hoping for the “faithful remakes” to apply to every single aspect of the games.

9 Five Different Contest Categories Become Six After Clearing The Elite Four

Since Pokémon Contests were introduced in the Gen III games, the categories of Coolness, Beauty, Cuteness, Smartness, and Toughness have stayed consistent to make the game mode and format accessible to every species and type of Pokémon.

Once the player has defeated the Elite Four and the Champion Cynthia, they have a chance to experience a new Contest, Brilliant for those players playing Brilliant Diamond and Shining for those playing Shining Pearl. These Contests are only open for those Pokémon that have acquired a Contest Star Ribbon, but the event itself can include some fun cameos, such as Hearthome Cuty Gym Leader Fantina.

While players may like to stick to using “cute” Pokémon for the Cuteness Contests, a Pokémon can obtain a Contest Star Ribbon for winning the Master Tiers for all five categories, Smartness, Cuteness, Coolness, Beauty, and Toughness. To do so is an impressive feat in itself but will also allow the Pokémon access to the Brilliant or Shining Contest.

7 Preparations Are Required In Order To Excel In The Visuals Round

The Visuals Evaluation is always at the start of any Pokémon Contest, with the entire show relying heavily on a popular entrance. A Pokémon can be fed and treated well to boost its appeal but can also be given appropriate Ball Capsules or other Items to make that truly spectacular entrance. A Scarf relevant to the target Contest type can also be held by the Pokémon to boost this appeal.

While it is certainly possible to win a Pokémon Contest despite having a poor Visuals Evaluation round, going through the necessary precautions to help your Pokémon make a good impression can only serve you well as the Contest proceeds.

6 Poffin-Making Is A Fun Little Mini-Game That Can Add Some Extra Edge To Your Contest Campaign

Feeding Poffins to Pokémon to make them happier and help them in Contests replaced the use of PokéBlocks for the same purpose. Increasing a Pokémon’s condition helps the Pokémon make more of an impression in the Visuals Evaluation.

The player can make their own Poffins using Berries picked up over the course of their journeys across Sinnoh. After successfully completing a mini-game to obtain the Poffins, they can then be given to the Pokémon to improve their stats in the various Contest fields. A Pokémon can be given up to 12 Poffins, with each one adding to the Pokémon’s Sheen, which can help make an impact during the Visuals Evaluation round. Poffins can be made both at Amity Square and at the Poffin House.

5 Creative Ball Capsules Can Add To The Spectacle Of The Visual Evaluation Round

When introducing a Pokémon in the Visuals Evaluation round, it is important that the Pokémon makes an impressive entrance. The addition of having vastly customizable Ball Capsules in the game, allows the player to add up to twenty stickers to one particular Ball Capsule.

The effect that each Sticker generates can accentuate a particular feature of their Pokémon that the player is looking to show off. Obtaining stickers relevant to the Contest’s style can certainly help bolster the impact of their introduction. These Ball Capsules can be used any time the Pokémon is called upon in Battle, making them arguably more than just being cosmetically and aesthetically pleasing when used in Contests.

4 The Dance Round Brings A Fun Rhythm Game

The Dance Evaluation round itself is a simple enough concept, with it being a rhythm game of sorts. The player simply has to follow the Poké Balls at the bottom of the screen and press the A button accordingly. These rhythm games get harder depending on the Rank, with the difficulty curve being especially noticeable.

The timing can be “Brilliant,” “Great,” “Nice,” or “Too Fast/Too Slow.” The score earned accumulates and adds to the final score of both the Dance Evaluation round and the entire Contest.

3 Every Pokémon Can Use A Special Move During The Dance Round

During the Dance Evaluation round, the player’s Pokémon will have the opportunity to use a special move in a bid to improve their own score while keeping up with or surpassing their opponents.

The move is selected before entering the Contest, so the player will need to pay attention to the potential moves and the effects that they can have, especially focusing on the move’s assigned Hype Points. The move must be applied during the rhythm game, but with strategic timing to get the most out of the boost.

2 The Dance Sector Of The Contest Can Result In Failure But The Best Performer Can Still Advance To The Next Class

Regardless of whether the player did really well in the Dance sector of the Contest or not, it is still possible for the Dance Contest to be a complete failure if the four competitors don’t collectively reach the required score.

While failing anything isn’t good for the ego or the self-confidence, the player can still make progress within the realms of Pokémon Contests as long as they beat the other three competitors overall. Doing so grants them the title of “Star of the Contest,” which is good enough to unlock the next tier within that specific Contest type.

While it is still possible to progress despite failing the Dance Evaluation of the Contest, emerging victorious as a part of a successful evaluation earns the player points towards raising their Hall Rank level.

There are four Hall Rank levels to work towards, with each being more aesthetically pleasing than the last. As a reward for the player improving at Pokémon Contests, the higher the Hall Rank, the better the stage looks in terms of its decoration, with it looking more like a legitimate event.
