Whisper of the Worm is getting a buff in December, but players that don’t have the rifle’s Exotic Catalyst won’t be able to get the full benefit of that buff since they currently can’t get the Catalyst. That’ll change with Witch Queen’s arrival as currently unavailable Catalysts will get thrown into the general activities loot pool.

“So you know, like general-purpose exotics, their Catalysts are just in the activities pool,” said Chris Proctor, design lead and Destiny 2 gun guru, during a recent episode of the Destiny Community Podcast. “The intent for Witch Queen is that all the currently inaccessible Catalysts go there.”

Exotic Catalysts are extra boons for Destiny 2’s best weapons that require the player to complete a certain objective–usually killing a bunch of enemies, but not always. With the Whisper of the Worm and Outbreak Perfected, getting the Catalyst involved completing their associated activities on a harder difficulty. However, both Exotics’ Catalysts have been unobtainable after their respective activities were both vaulted.

Putting them in the general activity pool means the player will have a chance to obtain either the Whisper of the Worm or Outbreak Perfected Catalyst from doing any activity. After that, Bungie will likely simplify the Catalysts requirements to just kill a bunch of enemies using the weapon as like so many other Catalysts in Destiny 2.

Forbes notes that The Fourth Horseman’s Catalyst will also return with The Witch Queen expansion, although its associated activity was never removed as with Outbreak Perfected and Whisper of the Worm.

Bungie also mentioned in last week’s TWAB that they were looking at Exotic Catalysts in general and have plans to deliver some sort of change to how they work in Witch Queen. “We don’t like that the desire for Exotic catalysts is largely driven by the orbs of power generation they provide,” wrote Bungie, “and have something in the works to let players build around that limitation.”

Whether this means Catalysts will stop generating orbs of power with Witch Queen or they’ll do something else entirely is hard to say. Bungie didn’t really give us much to go on. Hopefully next week’s blog update will give us a little more on what to expect with the upcoming expansion’s changes.
