One Day At A Time is one of the best family sitcoms of this generation. It debuted on Netflix, and season four currently airs on Pop TV. It’s a heartwarming comedy that is emotionally rewarding to watch. All of the characters are played wonderfully by an ensemble cast, and the show is a reimagination of the old sitcom of the same name.

One Day At A Time pays homage to the good old style of sitcom television, laugh track included. Yet, it modernizes itself in the themes and stories it chooses to tell. Every character has a strong character arc, and every episode focuses on something specific. 10 Laugh: “Sex Talk”

Penelope finds something she doesn’t want to see on Alex’s laptop. This episode keeps building up and has one of the most emotional endings in sitcom history. Fans of the show will cry along with everyone else on the show, especially in the last scene when everyone comes together. It’s a highly emotional episode, and we recommend viewers have a box of tissues nearby.

8 Laugh: “To Zir, With Love”

From season two, this episode has many things going for it, but there is nothing fans will enjoy more than watching Rita Moreno’s Lydia flirt. Upon realizing Elena’s crush on Dany, Lydia sets about showing Elena how to flirt. There is a hilarious scene when Alex demonstrates his flirting technique and Lydia starts blushing.

This episode is focused on Elena and Penelope dealing with their crushes. Elena’s awkwardness is highly amusing to watch. Penelope’s panicking is equally funny. This episode centered on flirting will have you laughing through and through.

7 Cry: “Not Yet”

The last episode of the show’s second season is one of those episodes that may just be too hard to watch. Lydia is in a coma, and everyone is at her bedside. Each family member talks to her separately. Fans will definitely struggle to see Lydia lying in bed, unable to respond to the other characters on the show.

The episode is an emotional rollercoaster. Everyone talks about the things Lydia has done for them; the love, care, and the affection she showered on them, and it will be very hard to not cry along with the characters in this episode.

6 Laugh: “The Funeral”

In the first episode of season three, all of the show’s familiar faces return, and some new faces make guest appearances. This includes Gloria Estefan, Melissa Fumero, and Stephanie Beatriz.

This is a low-stakes episode that will allow fans to relax and enjoy the show completely. Melissa Fumero and Justina Machado perform a dance sequence that is too hilarious. Isabella Gomez’s attempts at engaging with Stephanie Beatriz are hilarious, as well. Rita Moreno and Gloria Estefan face off against each other, and there’s a roomful of Cuban aunts who adore Alex. This episode just has everything going for it.

5 Cry: “Viva Cuba”

This episode is from the first season of the show and sees Lydia recounting her life before she came to America. It is a very emotional scene, and Rita Moreno performs it so well. Fans cannot help but let the tears flow when they hear about Lydia’s struggles in coming to America, as well as the struggles she faced even after arriving.

Lydia finds it hard to keep it together when she talks about things that she hasn’t spoken about in a very long time. It captures perfectly the immigrant struggle of their generation.

4 Laugh: “Boundaries”

This episode is from season four, and it will make fans need to pause to take breaths between laughing right from the minute the episode starts.

Alex walks into Penelope’s room at an unfortunate time, and the awkwardness that follows and the comical moments that ensue are just too funny. This is the premise of the episode, which then tries to talk about boundaries and the family’s lack of them. The episode also has many legendary statements by Lydia like “It is Adam and Eve. Not Bzzz and Eve,” and “I cannot be a mother-in-law to a dustbuster.”

3 Cry: “Hello, Penelope”

From season two, this is a very emotional episode to watch. It starts out with Penelope feeling like herself, and, feeling like she doesn’t need therapy and her medication anymore. The episode progressively shows her unraveling, and it’s really upsetting to watch.

Penelope stays in bed, blows off her date, refuses to accept help from her mother, and more. There is a monologue in the episode, a recording made by Penelope for herself, and it is heartwrenching to witness. Lydia’s struggle to understand and help Penelope is also equally emotional to watch.

2 Laugh: “Supermoon”

The sixth episode from season four is yet another hilarious episode of the show. All the couples on the show go up to the terrace to look at the supermoon. Each instance is funnier than the previous one. Alex and Nora, Elena and Syd, and Penelope and Max all make the excursion upstairs.

Then, they are all stuck together when Lydia and Dr. Berkowitz make their appearance. The series of couples and their ways of expressing love for each other makes the episode extremely entertaining.

1 Cry: “Drinking And Driving”

In this episode from season three, fans witness Schneider falling off the wagon. It’s an emotional episode with very difficult moments. Schneider has a difficult time after his father’s visit and goes back to the bottle after being sober for several years.

His fall and struggle to regain his sobriety are tough to watch, for sure, more so because Schneider is such a sensible, kind, and wonderful character otherwise. Watching his pain and watching his struggle, especially the moment in the laundry room with Alex, is very difficult.
