Treyarch has released another mysterious teaser trailer for its upcoming game Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. As the title suggests, the latest game in the annualized FPS series is set during the height of the Cold War. Treyarch has gone to great lengths to make the game feel authentic to the time period, even including controversial president Ronald Reagan.

It can sometimes be hard to drum up excitement for the latest entry in an annualized franchise, so Activision has been pulling out all the stops for its newest Call of Duty game. Before the title was revealed, fans were treated to a complex and enigmatic ARG experience, involving slide projectors being mailed to peoples’ houses and codes hidden in historic chess games. Fans were rewarded for their dedication with the first trailer for the new game, and since then, Activision has followed a much more conventional marketing model for the new title. The marketing campaign has moved along at a steady pace since then, and recently PlayStation 4 players even got a chance to experience an alpha build of the game’s multiplayer.

But it looks like Activision isn’t quite done toying with its fans just yet. Yesterday another cryptic teaser appeared on Treyarch’s Twitter account. The video depicts a mysterious hooded individual with a modulated voice telling viewers about a maze of secrets and a conspiracy. The video closes out with the words “PAWN TAKES PAWN,” a reference to the mysterious website that played a key role in the earlier installments of the ARG. The Tweet also links fans back to that website, revealing a new addition that lets visitors play a version of the classic adventure game Zork in their web browser. Check out the tweet below.

It’s unclear what players can expect from puzzling out this new development. Fans have seen campaign content, multiplayer gameplay, and they even know when the game will be released. There isn’t too much more left to puzzle out. The shadowy figure’s description of a conspiracy that must be blown up likely indicates the nature of the game’s story campaign, but given the Cold War setting most players should anticipate conspiracy anyway. The trailer might indicate that the player will be forced to confront the atrocities committed by America during the war, which would be a strong move for the series that a lot of fans probably wouldn’t expect.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has the potential to be one of the strongest games in the long-lived series. The Cold War is a very rich setting for a video game, and affords a lot of interesting story opportunities. The worst thing Activision and Treyarch can do with the singleplayer campaign is to play it too safe like they did by censoring Tiananmen Square protest footage in the trailer to avoid a ban from China. If, as this new trailer might suggest, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War tells a nuanced and objective story of the Cold War, then the game might just be a hit.
