Voldemort displayed rather uneven personality traits during his time as the main antagonist in Harry Potter. As a young Tom Riddle, he’d made much smarter decisions compared to his older, more brutal self, and perhaps this is why he ended up losing. However, the reality is that just a few crucial moments going differently than planned contributed to his downfall.

Had they worked in Voldemort’s favor, the Dark Lord would have triumphed. Along with that, had he made smarter decisions than he did, victory would have been assured. With that in mind, here are 10 ways where Voldemort could have ended up winning, and the resulting impact of such scenarios.

10 By Capturing Ron And Hermione To Lure Harry Out

This will come as a surprise to most, but Voldemort never actually had anything to do with Ron and Hermione. Not only did they never interact, but there’s no indication that Voldemort was even aware of their existence as Harry’s best friends. And yet, through a background check on Harry, Voldemort could easily have learned about them.

Using this information, it would have been the easiest move to either attack or capture Harry’s closest friends in order to draw him out and end things right then. The prime time to do this would have been when Wormtail returned to him, and Hermione was an easy target since she lived in a Muggle-inhabited area with no wizards to protect her.

9 Using Anybody’s Blood Other Than Harry’s For A New Body

Harry ended up surviving Voldemort in the last book all because of the latter’s choice to use his enemy’s blood in making a new body. There was absolutely no mandatory requirement in using specifically Harry for the spell, meaning Voldemort pretty much signed his own death warrant because of Lily’s magical protection.

The easiest solution to this would have been to use the blood of Bertha Jorkins as she was a pure-blood witch — so Voldemort would have no qualm with having it run in his veins — and had been murdered personally by him already. He could easily have made his last Horcrux through this kill and fashioned his new body, eliminating any chance of Harry’s survival.

8 Keeping Nagini Far Away From Hogwarts

A way to guarantee his survival would have been for Voldemort to send Nagini somewhere no one else would know about. Once the Battle of Hogwarts had escalated, Voldemort should have known Nagini was safer in a place where Harry couldn’t get to her, especially since Voldemort was aware Harry was looking for Horcruxes.

It wouldn’t have made any difference that Harry returned from the dead, or that the majority of the Death Eaters had lost, as there was no way for Voldemort to die if Nagini hadn’t been present near Neville Longbottom.

7 Inspecting Harry’s Body Himself

This happened to be another stroke of luck for Harry as Voldemort chose the one person who didn’t care about his victory in Narcissa Malfoy to check if the Boy Wizard was still alive. As she wanted to get to Hogwarts to find Draco, Narcissa lied that Harry was dead.

Sure, Voldemort did use the Cruciatus Curse on Harry — the Elder Wand protected him then — but if Voldemort had simply checked up on Harry’s condition personally, he could have easily had someone else kill him. All it would’ve taken were a simple few steps to Harry’s body and Voldemort would have won.

6 Finishing Snape Through The Killing Curse

It was through Snape’s memories that Harry found out he was supposed to offer himself up to be killed by Voldemort. And accessing his memories was only possible because Voldemort had left Snape to die slowly.

This happened due to Nagini landing the kill rather than Voldemort using the Avada Kedavra. The killing curse has an instant result, with not even a second’s worth of life left in the victim. If Voldemort had simply used it then Harry would never have gained Snape’s memories and known what he had to do to win.

5 Killing Kreacher In The Cave

In order to test out the substance he’d left in the bowl containing the Horcrux, Voldemort took Kreacher with him to the cave. In true Dark Lord fashion, Voldemort had no problem if Kreacher was killed by the Inferi. However, Kreacher was able to Apparate due to house-elves magic being different compared to wizards.

All of that could have been avoided had Voldemort just taken two seconds to use the Killing Curse on Kreacher in the cave itself. With Kreacher’s demise, there would have been no way for Regulus Black to retrieve the locket from the cave in the first place.

4 By Making At Least One Random Object Into A Horcrux

Dumbledore did come up with the explanation that Voldemort’s vanity wouldn’t allow him to make a meaningless object into a Horcrux, but that still doesn’t mean this wasn’t an option for the Dark Lord. Considering there were as many as eight of these things, he could have easily spared one Horcrux to a random object in order to guarantee his safety.

Retracing Voldemort’s steps turned out to be surprisingly easy, as Dumbledore, Regulus, and Harry figured out the location of each of the Horcruxes. Even one object out of the ordinary, though, would have meant no soul on Earth would’ve been able to locate the final Horcrux.

3 By Vacating Quirrell Before Harry Confronted Him

Much was made out of Voldemort becoming a second head that manifested behind Quirrell’s own. However, it turned out it wasn’t essential for Voldemort to do so as he gladly vacated the body once Harry had killed Quirrell with his touch.

For this reason, it would’ve been much easier for Voldemort to move out of Quirrell before Harry reached him at the end of Sorcerer’s Stone. This way, Quirrell wouldn’t have shared Voldemort’s weakness to Harry and could have finished him off. This would have then allowed Voldemort to gain the stone for himself.

2 Accessing Draco Malfoy’s Memories From Dumbledore’s Demise

As it turned out, Malfoy’s move of disarming Dumbledore at the Astronomy Tower ended up making him the master of the Elder Wand. All Voldemort knew, though, was that the death of Dumbledore had been carried out, without really knowing the details.

It was due to this that he killed Snape for ultimately no reason. However, it wasn’t an unavoidable problem as Malfoy had been within Voldemort’s access the whole time. Considering Voldemort loved to look into people’s memories, it would’ve been an easy fix had he done the same to Malfoy. By finding out he’d disarmed Dumbledore, Voldemort could have ended Malfoy and become the wand’s master.

1 By Using A Disillusionment Charm During The Battle Of Hogwarts

How this thought didn’t strike Voldemort really is a mystery. Since he was just as powerful as Dumbledore, casting a Disillusionment Charm would’ve been simple enough for him. Along with that, Voldemort could have made everyone believe he wasn’t entering the fight — just as he’d announced — while roaming around undetected.

That combined with his ability to fly would’ve made it extremely easy for Voldemort to locate Harry’s whereabouts inside Hogwarts. When he did make his presence known, Voldemort beat McGonagall, Slughorn, and Kingsley all by himself, so there was no chance of anyone overpowering him either. In fact, Voldemort wouldn’t have needed his Death Eaters in this scenario, and could have ended the battle single-handedly using the Disillusionment Charm.
