Warning: SPOILERS for Hawkeye episode 2.

Rogers: The Musical, the Captain America-themed show in Hawkeye, pays tribute to several Avengers, but it also falls back on a Clint Barton Phase 1 insult. In Hawkeye, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) abruptly changes his holiday plans with his family after Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) takes his old Ronin suit from a black-market auction. Bishop, a skilled archer in her own right, dons the suit after the auction is attacked and fights off the assailants. Unfortunately, wearing the suit lands her on the wrong side of enemies that Barton/Hawkeye made as Ronin. Now, Barton needs to get Bishop out of trouble before he can get on with the holidays.

The Captain America musical wasn’t always in Hawkeye. Recently, director Rhys Thomas said that the idea explains why Hawkeye and his kids were in New York. Though the director tried to backtrack on the initial suggestion, Kevin Feige loved the concept of a musical. The Marvel boss then brought in composer Marc Shaiman, who he had met at an event. Soon, there was an in-universe, Broadway-style song called “Save The City” for Rogers: The Musical.

Hawkeye doesn’t get a ton of respect in the Captain America musical. Barton takes his kids to the New York City Broadway show in the Hawkeye premiere, watching actors sing about the Avengers’ battle against Loki (Tom Hiddleston) on stage. The song celebrates most of the Avengers, honoring the strength of Chris Evans’ Captain America, the god-like powers of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and the Iron Man suit capabilities of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. However, the lyrics for Hawkeye are less flattering, saying, “Hawkeye seems cool, like a really nice guy.” It’s an insult to an Avenger that’s saved the world multiple times, fighting for humanity since the MCU’s beginning.

Hawkeye often gets overlooked in the MCU, and the Captain America musical continues that. As one of the only fully human Avengers, Hawkeye doesn’t usually top the list for fans’ favorites. While Thor is a god and Captain America is nearly invincible, Hawkeye’s main power is shooting arrows. The character even acknowledges his limitations in Avengers: Age of Ultron, pointing out the absurdity during Ultron’s (James Spader) assault. “The city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots, and I have a bow and arrow,” he says. Unfortunately, by ignoring Hawkeye’s abilities and simply calling him a “nice guy,” Rogers: The Musical continues Hawkeye’s biggest MCU criticism, showing the character is out of place on the team of superhumans.

Though Hawkeye continues an ongoing Clint Barton insult, the moment is necessary to change the world’s perception of the character. In the Hawkeye premiere, the Captain America musical overlooks the character’s abilities. Then, in episode 2, Hawkeye gets passed up on the street by a child who wants to meet a superhero and goes to actors in costumes instead. But, despite all that going on, Hawkeye’s real heroics still shine through. His actions against Loki in The Avengers inspired Kate Bishop to become a hero herself, and his humanity better connects him to the very people he’s saving. He is “cool” and a “really nice guy,” but Hawkeye shows he’s also much more than that.
