Completing Fortnite’s secret Astronaut Challenge, which is live now, results in the return of an old feature to the island: Rifts.

Season 3 is quickly becoming one of the more eventful and intriguing seasons in Fortnite history. The addition of a slowly-subsiding water level means Epic has been able to hide what is coming this season right beneath our feet. Old POIs have returned, drivable cars are incoming, and there’s still a belief that the lost city of Antaltis will be unveiled at some point.

However, perhaps the most interesting reveal to date is the one of a marooned spaceship with a mysterious astronaut inside. Data miners found the ship and its cargo beneath the waves, and the latest update dropped the water level again, revealing the crashed craft to the world. The ship also comes with its own set of secret challenges.

Completing the challenges will fix the ship so that it is able to launch and return to wherever it came from. We would recommend finding the ship and completing the challenges in Battle Lab. Even though this is a secret set of challenges, chances are the area in which the spacecraft can be found will be pretty busy right now as others try to complete the challenges.

Once the ship is fixed, it will lift off the ground and a countdown timer will appear above it. Once the timer hits zero, rather than watch it take off, the player, or players, who fixed it will be transported through Rifts. That’s right, the breaks in Fortnite’s space-time continuum have returned, but only in a very specific part of the island. Three of them will appear around the tiny island on which the ship crash-landed.

As for whether Rifts are back for good, and if this whole event will play a part in Season 3’s storyline, remains to be seen. Some players have hypothesized that Rifts are being reintroduced to replace Whirlpools. Whirlpools have been ever-present this season but as the waters subside, they are naturally beginning to disappear. As of right now, the only place Rifts can be found is in and around where the ship crash-landed at Craggy Cliffs.
