Chains of Fury is an ode to shooter games from the ‘90s done up in a unique comic book style.

First came cel-shading, which aimed to simplify graphics with bold colors in dynamic lighting. Now, Chains of Fury plans to take that a step further and make the whole game a giant, first-person, 3D comic book.

How does that work? Well, the levels and environments are all in three dimensions, but the enemies and certain items are in two dimensions. It’s almost like Paper Mario if Mario had a conniption and just went postal one day.

From Cobble Games in collaboration with Art Games Studio SA and publisher Gaming Factory SA, Chains of Fury plans to release on the PC and Nintendo Switch in the fourth quarter of 2020. The game will feature a single-player and split-screen multiplayer experience unlike any other.

You play as a bloodthirsty mercenary in some sort of dystopian future. Aliens and robots are involved, as well as a lot of guns. That’s about all we know about the plot. There are six worlds to traverse and an arsenal of guns to collect. Gameplay will be a combination of ’90s-style shooter with modern updates and Red Faction: Guerilla-style destructible environments.

Those destructible environments appear to be a big selling point for the game. Around 80% of each level’s walls, ceilings, and floors can be destroyed on average, leaving little left for enemies to hide behind. Get frustrated with a level’s maze-like corridors and you can just blast a path to the exit.

“This will be a breath of fresh air in the FPS shooter segment,” writes Art Games Studios CEO Jakub Bąk. “Chains of Fury in a unique way will combine the experiences known to players from games from years ago with contemporary and proven solutions. Hypnotizing comic stylistics and the wide possibilities to destroy the environment will allow players to finally receive a title that will certainly be remembered for a long time.”

Chains of Fury will arrive later in 2020, with a more specific date to be announced. Plans are to release on the Switch and PC first, with other major consoles to come later. And expect a very Doom-inspired heavy metal soundtrack when it does.
