At the height of his popularity, very few comedic actors could compete with Chevy Chase. The tall, dashing, charismatic funnyman was part of the original cast of Saturday Night Live in 1975, and by 1978, Chase had earned a Golden Globe nomination for his debut film role in Foul Play.

A few short years later and Chase would be known for some of the most acclaimed comedies of all time, including Caddyshack, Fletch, Three Amigos!, and the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise. But by the 1990s, Chase’s star-power faded considerably. From 2009 to 2014, however, he found a bit of a career resurgence with the NBC sitcom Community. That said, his film career continued to suffer. For a clearer picture, here are Chevy Chase’s 5 Best & 5 Worst Movies, According to IMDB!

10 Best: The Last Movie Star (2017) 6.9/10

While the dynamic duo of Burt Reynolds and Chevy Chase previously worked together in 2011, as we’ll see in the last entry on this list, the major difference between the two is in quality, with The Last Movie Star marking one of Chase’s most recent well-received films.

From writer/director Adam Rifkin, the film tells the story of Vic Edwards (Reynolds), an effete movie star ruminating over what it means to grow old in the film industry. Chase plays Sonny, one of Vic’s close friends, who helps the actor navigate the ups and downs of a small film festival in Nashville, Tennessee.

9 Worst: Zoom (2006) 4.4/10

As you’ll notice, 2006 was an extremely unforgiving year for Chase’s floundering movie career. The run of bad luck began with the animated film Zoom, in which an ex-superhero sets out to empower a bevy of teenagers with similar superhuman skills.

Tim Allen stars as Captain Zoom, a disgraced former superhero who looks to hand his responsibilities to a group of unlikely teenagers. The underwhelming family film sees Chase as Dr. Grant, a scientist leading the Zenith Project.

8 Best: Fletch (1985) 6.9/10

As a solo act, few Chase films can compete with the multifaceted tour-de-force performance he gives as Fletch, the ever-cool smooth-talking master of disguise!

Irwin Fletcher (Chase) is a news reporter who gets involved in a complex murder plot after agreeing to kill cancer-stricken millionaire, Alan Stanwyck (Tim Matheson). Fletch becomes involved with Alan’s wife, Gayle (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson) while going undercover in a slew of hilarious costumes. John Cocktosten, anyone?

7 Worst: Hedgehogs (2016) 4.2/10

In the English-language version of the Chinese 3D animated film Hedgehogs, Chase lends his voice to the role of ThinkMan. Of course, if the man was really thinking, he’d have opted to stay away from this listless animated blunder!

Also known as Bobby The Hedgehog, the film follows Bobby (Anthony Padilla), a stubborn and stuck-up rodent tasked with protecting his array of hedgehogs when battling the rival “Tie Tui.” When Bobby suffers an injury and loses his memory, he sets out on a journey of self-discovery.

6 Best: Caddyshack (1980) 7.3/10

Chase has never been cooler or more dashing than as Ty Webb in the all-time classic comedy Caddyshack, in which he shares the screen and holds his own with the legendary likes of Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, and Ted Knight!

When a private golf club is terrorized by a new rich new member, Al Czervik (Dangerfield), the snooty staff, led by Judge Smails (Knight), must make adjustments. Webb is a zenlike golf pro with more talent than ambition who helps young caddy, Danny (Michael O’Keefe), earn a club scholarship.

5 Worst: Goose On The Loose (2006) 4.2/10

Prior to landing a plum role on Community in 2009, Chase was slumming it pretty hard on the big screen. Exhibit B from the year 2006 belongs to Goose on the Loose, an obvious paycheck performance requiring very little effort from the one-time comedic titan.

Chase plays sinister school principal Congreve Maddox in the film, who steals a talking pet goose from a sad little boy named Donnelly (Max Morrow). Maddox plans to fatten the Goose up and enter him into a culinary competition. It’s up to Donnelly to hatch a rescue plan and save his pal Randall the Goose (Dave Foley) before it’s too late!

4 Best: National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) 7.4/10

In what his certainly the most iconic role of his career, Chase was afforded the chance to play the bumbling nitwit Clark Griswold over the course of five films. Do you think they’ll ever be a sixth?

Written by John Hughes and directed by Harold Ramis, Vacation features the ultimate road-trip from hell as the Griswolds pile up in the clunky “family truckster” and head west from Chicago to California. The objective? To have as much fun as possible at Wally World (Six Flags) theme-park. Everything goes wrong on the trip, ending in a disappointing park closure for maintenance upon their arrival. Yup, Clark goes absolutely postal!

3 Worst: Doogal (2006) 2.8/10

Chevy Chases 5 Best & 5 Worst Movies According To IMDB

With an even lower 23/100 Metascore, the loveless dog of a movie known as Doogal is nothing short of an embarrassment for all involved. This includes Chase, who notches his third film in 2006 among his bottom five worst of his career. Woof!

In basic terms, the plot finds a happy-go-lucky mutt named Doogal (Daniel Tay) out to save the world from an evil warlock called Zeebad (Jon Stewart). Chase voices the magical Train on which Doogal and his pals travel around the globe to defeat Zeebad.

2 Best: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) 7.6/10

Chevy Chases 5 Best & 5 Worst Movies According To IMDB

It’s a bit of a surprise to see Christmas Vacation outrank the original, according to IMDb. Then again, with John Hughes responsible for the screenplay, it isn’t that much of a reach, is it?

Set four years after European Vacation, the Griswolds host their own family vacation, this time during the holiday season. With a crowded guest-list, including the return of cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid), Clark begins to feel the pressure when his boss fails to give him his annual Christmas bonus.

1 Worst: Not Another Not Another Movie (2011) 2.6/10

Just when Chase thought his film career couldn’t sink any lower than Doogal, he dug himself even deeper with the offensive Not Another Not Another Movie five years later. Why, oh, why?!

Despite getting the chance to work with Burt Reynolds, the lamely derivative parody must be a regrettable low point in Chase’s otherwise legendary film career. For what it’s worth, the plot concerns a movie studio’s dogged attempt to make as much money as humanly possible, despite woefully inferior film projects it produces.
