Although Loki established that multiversal variants tend to look at least slightly different, the appearance of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man: No Way Home is almost identical to his look in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. The first full trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home confirmed that several classic Spider-Man villains will return, with Doctor Octopus seemingly leading them. Green Goblin, Electro, Lizard, and Sandman were teased, but their physical appearance hasn’t been revealed yet.

Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus are tricky villains to translate onscreen. But even though Green Goblin’s armor earned him criticism, Sam Raimi did a stellar job of making Spider-Man’s classic villains look realistic yet still true to the comics. Doctor Octopus, particularly, captured the essence of the villain and looked exceptionally intimidating. Besides, Alfred Molina’s performance has been lauded as one of the best in the superhero genre.

While the in-story reason why Doctor Octopus’ appearance didn’t change in Spider-Man: No Way Home is one of many details that have yet to be explained, the trailer suggests that he was plucked directly from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe (or a very similar reality) before his death. That’s despite the fact that he ought to be a variant by the logic established in Loki. As for why Marvel made this decision, it’s precisely Alfred Molina’s memorable performance in Spider-Man 2 that kept them from changing his appearance. What’s more, No Way Home implemented de-aging technology to ensure Molina looks as unchanged as possible. Since the most anticipated aspect of No Way Home is the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men alongside their respective villains, the movie can achieve a bigger impact if all of them come back looking exactly as fans last saw them.

The MCU’s Multiverse allows Marvel Studios to potentially recast any actor and bring in any beloved portrayal of a character from other non-MCU properties. Peggy Carter’s transformation into Captain Carter in What If…? episode 1 proved that alternate versions of already established characters could appear in the future once their actors depart. On the flip side, characters like Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus are simply too perfect to replace. Willem Dafoe and Jamie Foxx also reprise their respective roles, but the MCU took this opportunity to update at least Electro’s looks (as teased by Foxx’s comments that he “won’t be blue in this one”). That will presumably be explained by the variant explanation.

With the MCU growing to a colossal degree and the Multiverse offering limitless possibilities, there’s little that movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home can’t do. A crossover between the three different live-action Spider-Man franchises is just around the corner, and the convergence of the MCU with Sony’s Spider-Man universe and the X-Men seems promising. In regards to Doc Ock, it’s a textbook case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
