USA Network and SYFY confirm Chucky season 2 is in development and will premiere sometime in 2022 following rave reviews and strong ratings. The horror series hails from Child’s Play creator Don Mancini and serves as a sequel to the film franchise, taking place after the events of Cult of Chucky in which Fiona Dourif’s Nica Pierce was successfully possessed by the titular spirit. Chucky revolves around a teenage boy who discovers the Good Guy doll at a yard sale in a quiet New Jersey town, which is subsequently rocked by a string of murders that threaten to expose the suburb’s dark secrets.
Dourif returns for Chucky alongside franchise vets Alex Vincent as Andy, Christine Elise McCarthy as Kyle, Brad Dourif as the titular serial killer and Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany Valentine. Alongside the legacy stars, the cast for the series includes Child’s Play newcomers Zackary Arthur, Teo Briones, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Björgvin Arnarson, Lexa Doig and Devon Sawa. Chucky finally hit USA Network and SYFY this past October after over two years of development and now fans of the franchise have exciting news for the series.
Just over a month after the show first premiered, USA Network and SYFY have confirmed that Chucky season 2 is officially greenlit. The networks paired the announcement with a video, also revealing that the horror series will return in 2022 and season 1 will arrive on Peacock on December 1. The decision to renew Chucky for season 2 doesn’t come as much of a surprise given the large success the show has enjoyed since its premiere in October. The series has received the largest level of critical acclaim for the Child’s Play franchise, currently sitting at a 90 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the bar set by its predecessor Cult of Chucky at a 79 percent approval rating. Additionally, Chucky has been a ratings hit for the networks, reaching over 9.5 million viewers in its debut season across all of its platforms and becoming the second-largest new cable series of 2021 for the 18-49 demographic behind fellow SYFY title Resident Alien.
With Chucky now officially renewed for season 2, it will be interesting to see how it affects the roadmap Mancini has set for the future of the franchise. Prior to the show’s debut, Mancini confirmed that the titular killer doll would return for future films, which seems likely to be further down the road as the show is set to return next year. Though a new film may be a ways away, audiences can look forward to the season finale of Chucky airing on November 30 followed by the show’s first season premiering on Peacock on December 1.
