C’mon C’mon director, Mike Mills, has opened up about the rapport that Woody Norman and Joaquin Phoenix had on set of the film. C’mon C’mon is an upcoming American drama written and directed by Mills and starring Phoenix, Norman, Gaby Hoffmann, Scoot McNairy, and Jaboukie Young-White. The film follows radio journalist Johnny (Phoenix) who forms an unexpected bond with his nephew, Jesse (Norman), while on a cross-country trip. C’mon C’mon will make its theatrical debut on November 19, 2021.
Early reviews for C’mon C’mon have been largely positive and have praised the profound beauty of the film. Mills provides an elegant black and white framing for a unique take on family dysfunction and childhood innocence. The film encompasses the trials and struggles of being an adult, while also exploring how children perceive the world. Phoenix and Norman’s performances have also received early praise for the amazing onscreen chemistry the pair share. The two share an incredible bond onscreen, but they boast a unique relationship behind-the-scenes, as well.
As reported by Vulture, Mills has opened up about the special relationship that Norman and Phoenix shared on set. Norman had no reservations about performing alongside Phoenix and was quick to demonstrate his skill as an actor. He was quick to memorize his own lines and to challenge Phoenix’s improvisations, even stating that he carried Phoenix the entire film. Meanwhile, Phoenix was supportive of Norman’s wit and talent, unable to abstain from praising the boy’s incredible acting. You have no idea how un-childlike this person [Woody Norman] is. And how childish Joaquin [Phoenix] and Gaby [Hoffman] are… Woody’s got all his lines memorized, and Joaquin’s kind of looking at the sides. And Joaquin just improvised the line, and Woody’s like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, that’s not the line.’ It’s like, Oh! God. Buckle up, be prepared. I remember the first time I showed Joaquin little cuts of scenes. He comes in after a scene, and goes, ‘That little fucker! He is so good. That little fuck’… But I also, as a director, I knew, This is gold. They have secrets, they have their own world, their own communication, their own like thriving hive little thing for themselves.
Norman seems to have been completely unphased by Phoenix’s experience and accolades. Even the most decorated of actors might be intimidated to act alongside Phoenix, but Norman demonstrated an admirable confidence for his young age. Not only did he perform exceptionally well, but he also wasn’t afraid to challenge and push Phoenix. Through their teasing and challenging, the two struck up their own little inside relationship that was central to their chemistry onscreen. C’mon C’mon sees Phoenix’s struggle with single parenting, and to be able to express that emotion relies on one truly being exposed to and developing a bond with a child. The special personal bond that Phoenix and Norman developed offscreen was vital to giving their onscreen performance the emotion it needed to appear real.
C’mon C’mon has the potential to perform very well with early positive reception and its strong cast and crew. Mills has a knack for encompassing the problems of the human condition, while Phoenix is known for playing emotionally-charged unconventional characters. This, combined with Norman’s confidence and precociousness, promises to make C’mon C’mon a memorable film. Casting child stars alongside well-established actors is a difficult feat that requires a certain level of skill and maturity on the child’s part. Fortunately, Norman took on the challenge fiercely and will likely emerge as a true child star after the film’s premiere. Phoenix and Norman’s relationship and ability to challenge one another fits perfectly with C’mon C’mon’s spirit of truly listening to and valuing the perspective of children.
