For a while it seemed as though there would be no end to the remakes and revivals born of ’90s nostalgia. Girl Meets World is chugging right along on Disney, Fuller House is set to stream on Netflix alongside the new Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp, and The X-Files revival is coming up on FOX in early 2016.

It seems there will be one less revival of a beloved sitcom on the air come fall, however. We can now report that there is some bad news for Coach fans, as NBC has officially canceled its revival of the hit sitcom.

The Wrap is reporting that the network will not move forward with its original 13-episode order, which would have had Nelson back as Coach Hayden Fox, and would have brought series creator Barry Kemp back on board as well. Though we don’t know much about the show’s plot, we do know the focus would have been on Fox deciding to come out of retirement to become an assistant coach to his son at an Ivy League school.

Coach ran for nine seasons from 1989 to 1997 on ABC and focused on Coach Fox’s professional and family life. In 1992 Nelson won an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy. Since Coach went off the air, Nelson has been a film and television staple guest-starring on numerous shows with roles in The District and My Name Is Earl, as well as films like Blades of Glory and, perhaps most famously, The Incredibles. Most recently, Nelson starred as the Braverman family patriarch Zeek Braverman on NBC’s Parenthood for six seasons.

The abrupt cancellation before any episodes or even trailers have aired is a bit odd, as the show likely would have attracted viewers just from name recognition alone. And the series already had at built in audience from the legions of dedicated fans who watched the show in the ’90s. Perhaps the network recognized that this new version might not be able to recapture the magic of the original, or maybe NBC is trying to shore up some money for another deal.

Either way, it’s hard to feel too upset over the cancellation of a reboot that no one was really asking for. Still, NBC’s decision to axe the series before it aired hasn’t swayed the studio behind the revival, as Deadline is reporting the show is still being shopped around to other networks.
