Cobra Kai’s showrunner confirms that season 5 has wrapped filming. The series, which is based on The Karate Kid franchise and follows returning characters Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, has been a huge hit since it moved to Netflix. Estimates shared by the streaming service revealed that season 3 was seen by more than 41 million households within its first 28 days, and it cracked the top ten in Netflix’s trending charts in 85 countries, earning the number one spot in 28. Counting all three seasons of Cobra Kai so far, 73 million households have watched at least some of the show.

The interest in the Karate Kid follow-up has continued into Cobra Kai season 4, which will premiere on December 31, as fans have been eager to find out new information about the coming episodes. It could also be gleaned from the show’s track record of early renewals, as Netflix is more usually known for quietly canceling series that fail to attract a big enough audience early on. By contrast, Cobra Kai season 5 was confirmed before season 4 even premiered, and the cast and crew have been filming since September.

And now, showrunner and co-creator Jon Hurwitz confirms they’ve officially wrapped. Sharing a tweet with fans of the show to reveal the news, he also includes a photo of himself and fellow co-creator Josh Heald, with a caption that reads “Five. Fin. #ByeAtlanta #CobraKai.” The former hashtag references the fact that the Netflix series films primarily in Atlanta, Georgia. Check out Hurwitz’s original post below:

Cobra Kai season 4 promises plenty of fun drama and action for fans, perhaps most clearly with the return of the antagonistic Terry Silver and the focus on the highly anticipated All Valley tournament. But in interviews ahead of the show’s return, producers have made clear that the series will not end with season 5. They’ve likewise expressed that, in terms of story, they’ve moved far beyond the narratives that viewers haven’t even seen yet. So, while season 4 will look to address the fallout from season 3 and carve a path forward, viewers will also be looking ahead for clues about a whole other batch of episodes that have already been filmed.

Hurwitz has confirmed that Cobra Kai spinoffs have been discussed, adding that some ideas for new series are further along in development than others. Long-time Karate Kid loyalists have their own preferences for where the show should go next. But, regardless of those differences of opinion, it’s definitely a positive sign that the future of the franchise is going strong.
