Communitys Darkest Timeline Explained Every Event That Happens

Community’s alternate realities are explored in the so-called The Darkest Timeline, but what did that mean for the characters involved? Revolving around a diverse study group at a community college, Community follows the members as their friendships evolve – including in the worst ways. The Darkest Timeline is introduced in Community season 3, episode 4, “Remedial Chaos Theory.”

The Darkest Timeline is the result of a game of chance that happens at a housewarming party thrown by Abed (Danny Pudi) and Troy (Donald Glover). The Community gang’s all there – Jeff (Joel McHale), Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Annie (Alison Brie), Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), and Pierce (Chevy Chase). When the pizza delivery guy rings the buzzer, Jeff (Joel McHale) suggests a roll of the die should determine who answers the door. Abed warns against this, saying it will create six different timelines, which it does.

The worst outcome of those dice rolls is The Darkest Timeline of Community lore. It happens when Jeff rolls a one, and Troy leaves the apartment and sets disastrous events into gear by dislodging the boulder from the Raiders of the Lost Ark model that’s on display. Troy returns to find utter chaos, with Pierce shot and the room in flames. He focuses on a seemingly cursed troll doll and screams, “Noooooo!”

How The Community Darkest Timeline Is Different

The Darkest Timeline is confirmed by Abed in the Community study room afterwards where the results of that fateful party are on full display:

  • Pierce is dead from his gunshot wound
  • Annie is in therapy for the guilt she feels for bringing the gun
  • Jeff lost an arm to the fire
  • Troy lost his larynx by trying to eat the troll doll
  • Shirley has a drinking problem
  • Britta has only a dyed blue streak in her hair
  • Abed, feeling he is now evil, is obsessed with returning to the Prime Timeline

“Remedial Chaos Theory” wasn’t the last time the Darkest Timeline appeared in Community. It was mentioned casually throughout events, and

Evil Abed resurfaced in the season 3 finale “Introduction to Finality” where, when fearing Troy’s transfer to the air conditioning repair program, Abed attempts to recreate the listed setup of the Darkest Timeline (including removing Jeff’s arm). The threat became more real in season 4 finale “Advanced Introduction to Finality” (after a tease in “Intro to Knots” a couple of episode prior) where the evil versions of the gang invade the Prime Timeline and engage in a fateful paintball match. The Prime Community characters win, and the Darkest Timeline wasn’t featured again after Dan Harmon returned to the show.

Far from just a gag, the Dark Timeline allowed Community to provide some introverted analysis of the show’s core dynamics. How the characters interact when the group isn’t whole reveals that Troy is the biggest lynchpin to their success (ironic given Donald Glover’s departure midway through season 5). It’s a clever and amusing tool about inner demons, one that has become a meme in its own right thanks to the bizareness of our own reality.
