A new development in the Cooking Mama: Cookstar saga: publisher Planet Entertainment is now selling physical copies directly from their website. At one point, it was unclear whether Planet Entertainment was even taking responsibility for publishing the game, but now it seems they have positioned themselves as the official retailer of the newest entry in the Cooking Mama series.

When Cooking Mama: Cookstar vanished from the Nintendo eShop the same day it released, it also vanished from retail stores as well as the publisher’s website. Rumors began circulating that Nintendo pulled the title because it was secretly being used to mine cryptocurrency. While players crafted rainbow grilled cheese sandwiches, the developers were supposedly using the processing power of the Switch to earn bitcoins.

That rumor has been debunked, but the circumstances surrounding the game’s sudden vanishing is still pretty mysterious. One off-the-record developer has claimed that the publisher, Planet Entertainment, is caught up in a legal dispute with Cooking Mama’s IP holder, Office Create. Supposedly, Office Create (now known as Cooking Mama Limited) visited the American developers of Cookstar. There was some kind of creative dispute, and now Office Create is attempting to stop the sale of the game.

Planet Entertainment has made no official statement on the controversy, but several days ago, the publishers created a digital storefront to officially sell the game. Their reasoning doesn’t mention the legal battle, but rather indicates the lack of physical retail options as the catalyst for the web store:

Planet Entertainment, the publisher of Cooking Mama: Cookstar, is offering the game directly to consumers during the Covid-19 Pandemic. With most of the retail locations closed or out of stock, we are making the game available directly from us, Planet Entertainment.

Our review for Cooking Mama: Cookstar will publish later this week, but so far we can say it’s both charming and exactly what one would expect from a true Cooking Mama game. Hopefully the legal dispute will settle quickly so that players are able to experience the game that the developers clearly put a lot of heart and soul into. Unfortunately, the experience has almost certainly been soiled for many before they’ve even had the chance to play it.

Cooking Mama: Cookstar is available for $39.99 USD on the game’s official website.
