Netflix has released a new video for the forthcoming live-action series adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, confirming it will debut on the platform this fall. Created by Hajime Yatate, the late ’90s anime centered on a group of bounty hunters on the titular spaceship as they travel around the galaxy in 2071. Only airing for 26 episodes, the source series has continued to receive critical acclaim in the years since and is regarded as one of the greatest anime titles produced and credited as helping introduce Western audiences to the genre.

An attempt at bringing the series to life has been in the works for nearly five years now, beginning in mid-2017 when Tomorrow Studios and original producer Sunrise Inc. partnered for a live-action adaptation with Christopher Yost writing and Netflix acquiring the project in November 2018. Development was moving along smoothly, with John Cho, Daniella Pineda, Mustafa Shakir, and Alex Hassell being cast the following April. Filming got underway later that year, but production delays have hampered the series due to Cho’s on-set injuring and a halt in production from the COVID-19 pandemic. But with the crew finally able to get back to work in September in New Zealand, fans finally won’t have to wait for long for its arrival.

A couple of months after it was confirmed that production on the first season of the live-action adaptation had wrapped, Netflix has debuted a video announcement confirming that Cowboy Bebop will arrive this fall. In addition, the cast teaser has revealed that Yoko Kanno, the composer behind the score of the original series, is returning to create the soundtrack for the update. While many are understandably skeptical at the notion of a live-action adaptation of one of the most-celebrated animes in history, especially after the feature adaptations of Ghost in the Shell and Death Note, there seems to be a lot riding in Bebop’s favor. From the inclusion of original series director Shinichirō Watanabe as a creative consultant on the project to its diverse cast, so far, it seems the proper steps are being taken to deliver an exciting take on the property. Plus, with Mandalorian writer Yost penning the series, the writer’s room has quality minds there.

However, the cherry on top is the fact that Kanno herself is returning to compose the music for the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. The jazz-infused blues permeating the original anime were an essential part of its charm and tone establishment for its neo-noir atmosphere. While there are certainly plenty of composers out there who could try and recreate that iconic sound, it’s even better to see Netflix going directly to the source. With a confirmed release window now, hopefully, audiences will get a proper trailer for the series soon.
