Critical Role, a show “where a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons,” has made an indelible impact on the world of gaming and on the internet. One of the best things about the show is the community and the art that comes from it.

Fan theories are in no short supply as well and run the gamut of everything from hilarious to downright distressing and depressing. One particular fan comic focuses on The Traveler, the deity worshipped by Jester, the tiefling trickster cleric, played by Laura Bailey.

This article contains spoilers for Campaign 2, Episode 94 of Critical Role

The Traveler is a new god, knowledge of him really only emerging within the last decade. His mysterious nature and lack of backstory worries The Mighty Nein (the group of player characters); they had just gone through a lot of trouble with a cult and one god masquerading as another. Since The Traveler is an unknown, and someone that only Jester can see, they were worried that she was also being manipulated.

Over and over, Jester would affirm that The Traveler really was a deity– he had to be, because he gave her power. But just what sort of god was he? No one really knew, not even Jester. In light of his mysterious background, one fan came up with the amusing theory that he wasn’t a god. He was just some mysterious magic-user Jester innocently idolized until he gained deity-hood. It was a fun idea, but just speculation. At least, it was speculation until the most recent episode:

This was so many information bombshells dropped all at once, confirming multiple fan theories. Not only was he confirmed to be an NPC encountered in the first campaign (confirmed by Matt after the session ended), but he really was a new god, a fey who became a deity because of Jester’s pure and intense belief in him. Even better is the last panel of the comic, where The Traveler is thinking and worrying about what to do now that he’s become a god. This was the case in the episode, where he came to ask Jester for advice because he had no idea how to really be a god.

Fan theories and fan art are delightful, even more so when they come together… and they’re most satisfactory when they’re revealed to be canon.

You can watch a couple of the cast members talk about this moment on Talks Machina, the after-session talk-back show. Critical Role is live every Thursday at 7 p.m. PST.
