CS: GO commentator and former player says Riot’s Project A is the best game he’s played since CS: GO. The new game is a tactical shooter that’s said to be a mix between Overwatch and CS:GO and features teams of five battling it out on a range of different maps.
The game was announced to celebrate Riot’s tenth anniversary and they shared some footage showing the fast-paced action and fascinating character abilities. It will be their first foray into the first-person shooter world, and they say that their goal is to make a competitive game with precise gunplay and interesting characters. Although the game hasn’t been released yet, they are already thinking ahead to thwart cheating and deliver the best experience possible.
HenryG was allowed to play Project A at Riot EU and shared his thoughts on Twitter. He said, “First of all, at its core, Project A is essentially a round-based, 5on5, tactical shooter (most similar to CS: GO as a twitter surface-level comparison), with the better (and slightly diluted) elements of class/hero based FPS games such as Overwatch or Apex Legends, for example.” He goes on to say, “One of the most exciting elements of the game to me was the map design. They have been beautifully created and follow Counter-strikesque familiar lanes and choke points. With the focus on game-play substance, rather than flowery aesthetics.”
What we know about the game so far is that it will be set in the near future and will have two bomb sites, with one team attacking and one team defending before switching sides. The economy system will be similar to CS: GO with teams having to buy weapons at the start of each round with points they’ve accumulated in the previous round. What sets Project A apart is that abilities will also have to be bought at the beginning of each round instead of being inherent in the characters like in Apex Legends.
Riot Games is famous for having League of Legends as its only game on the eSports scene. There’s no doubt that Project A will be gunning for some of the major titles out there to take a piece of the shooter pie. It will have to take on established titles like CS: GO, Fortnite, Overwatch, Apex, and Rainbow Six, which already have a huge following.
Luckily for Riot, we are arguably in the golden age of first-person shooters, and there have never been so many games to choose from and so many online players. The current eSports boom could also be on their side. If Riot can deliver something special, there’s no reason why Project A can’t be the next big game – but it could end up in the bin like Battle Born. So far, there’s no official date release date, but it’s expected to drop later this year.
