’90s classic video game Chex Quest has once again been revived, once again available for free, but this time in comic book form.

The original Chex Quest was spawned back in 1996 by developer Digital Café, who grabbed ahold of The Ultimate Doom engine of 1995 and used it to make a game about a Chex-clad soldier who fights slimy green invertebrates called Flemoids. Yes, Chex as in the cereal. Chex Quest was apparently devised as a marketing move aimed at drumming up some excitement around the Chex cereal brand, especially amongst cereal-consuming kids.

The non-violent cereal-based shooter (surprisingly?) took off, and since then has gained an infamous reputation and a bit of a cult following. The game received an HD multiplayer remake earlier this year – Chex Quest HD – and now it has its very own comic book, too: The Untold Tales of Chex Quest. Both Chex Quest HD and the new comic book are completely free.

The team behind the comic book’s development comprises the likes of comic creators Tom Scioli, Tyler Bence, Morgan Beem, Maria Capelle Frantz, as well as well-known video game illustrator Marc Ericksen. YouTuber Angry Video Game Nerd will be providing an introduction for the comic, too.

According to the creators: “For the first time in Chex Quest’s 24-year history, gaming fans can now explore an exclusive look at the home dimension of the villainous, nutrient-devouring Flemoids.” Plus, each of the six members of the Chex Mix Squadron will get their very own dedicated story, and a pin-up gallery of exclusive artwork will be included.

A digital download of the comic is available for free via Comixology and the official Chex Quest website, with physical copies getting their nation-wide release in mid-August as part of Free Comic Book Summer. There will also be a limited number of physical black and white variant copies released – only 500 to be exact – so if you’re a true Chex Quest veteran then you’ll definitely want to Chex that one out (sorry).
