The Devil is the titular antagonist of Cuphead: Don’t Deal with the Devil. As such, he also acts as the final boss of the game, and is also among the hardest bosses of said game, utilizing a variety of tactics to kick players’ cups.

Part of his difficulty comes in the four varying stages of his battle. Each stage has a variety of obstacles players will need to be aware of and overcome, if they ever want to beat him. So, here’s a small guide on how to do just that.

For this final battle, not every bullet, charm, or super attack is of equal value. Of the two bullet types allowed in any battle, the Roundabout is a good pick, averaging at 8.5 points of damage per bullet, and a decent range that works well with dodging the Devil’s many attacks.

The next recommended bullet would be the Lobber. It, too, has decent range and damage (at 11.6 points per bullet), but it has a slightly slower fire rate, and can be difficult to aim at enemies from above (where the Devil goes at times), so it’ll take some precision.

For your Super, it’s better to actually not go on the offensive, but rather the defensive, and pick the Invincibility spell. Many of the Devil’s attacks, especially in the later stages, rely on the difficult dodges to avoid, so they’ll probably quickly drain your health. This Super can allow for some leeway against those attacks.

For the allotted charm, the Smoke Bomb dash is also recommended for the same reason. The second best charm would then be the Heart, as the needed extra point of health and already-heightened bullet damage will more than make-up than the slight loss to attack.

4 Phase One

The first phase of the Devil’s boss fight begins next to the Casino of Inkwell Hell. As the devil sits upon his throne, he’ll call upon a variety of attacks to rain down on you, either through incantations, or transformations. Additionally, during all incantations, the Devil has a small animation where he’ll swing his trident around, while doing said chant. Be mindful to avoid said weapon, as it can cause damage.

  • Incantation 1: The Devil creates four crystal balls which will erratically bounce around the arena for a short period. One of the four balls can be parried.
  • Incantation 2: This comes in the form of five fire balls that will move left to right on the stage, then back across. There is, again, one parryable fire ball, though it will be surrounded by the other four.
  • Incantation 3: This is another fire ball attack. This time there will be six fire balls formed in a hexagon. But unlike the other, this is a honing attack that you will need to dodge. Like the other incantations, there will be one projectile to parry.
  • Transformation 1 — Spider: The Devil detatches his head and it takes the form of a spider. It will then slam onto the ground anywhere from three to five times, wherever you’re standing.
  • Transformation 2 — Goat: The Devil’s head takes on the form of a goat, and his hands become hooves. Said hooves will rapidly close in from either side of the screen to clap in the middle, damaging you if they hit.
  • Transformation 3 — Serpent: The Devil’s head takes on a draconic form. It will snake its way from either the left or right side of the screen, almost all the way across, and force you into a narrow corner to be hit by other attacks.

Aside from himself, the Devil has minions in the form of tiny purple demons, which will jump out from behind his throne to rush and damage you. They can make dodging other attacks difficult, but fortunately only take 4.5 hit points to beat (5 on Expert mode). The Devil, himself, takes 665-735 points to beat Stage One.

3 Phase Two

With the end of Stage One, the Devil sheds his skin and descends into a hole. You will have to follow into Stage Two, where he’s become a giant. The only damageable part of him will be his eyes, and there will be new attacks to contend with.

  • Fire Axe: The Devil merges his two eyes into one, from which he summons a fiery axe. It will then move outward across the screen in a spiral, damaging you if it hits.
  • Bat Bomb: The Devil summons a bat bomb from his ear. It can be immediately parried to neutralize it. If not, you have a little time to avoid its range, or else take massive amounts of damage.
  • Poker Chips: Though not an active attack, flaming poker chips will fall from the sky and damage you if they hit you. They will fall in either a left-right or right-left pattern all the way across the stage to then repeat back.

The final tidbit of difficulty is that this stage is a platformer. There will be five small ledges to stand upon, with a fiery pit down below to avoid — hard to do, with the Devil’s littany of attacks. It will take 570 to 630 points of damage to move onto the next stage.

2 Phase Three

The start of phase three is marked by the loss of platforms. You will only have three ledges to dodge between, instead of the original five. And once again, the Devil will change up his attack methods, though the poker chips remain a constant.

  • Purple Demons: The Devil will summon two demons to either side of the screen, where two of the ledges used to be. They will shoot out skulls to hit you, with the occasional skull acting as a parryable object. These demons take roughly 42 to 50 points to dispatch.
  • Blue Demons: These little minions act as homing attacks, flying at the top of the screen before divebombing you to deal damage. They won’t be too difficult to dispatch, though, only taking 3.5 points to destroy.
  • Poker Chips: Same as before.

Aside from these minor demons, you will still have to attack the Devil. He’ll take 475 to 525 points to move on, this time around. The constant change of attacks can be difficult to master. But if you keep a calm head, you’ll get to that last stage.

1 Phase Four

This is the final stage of the battle. At a first glance, it will be deceptively easy, as the Devil is reduced to tears, with no other attacks but the falling poker chips. However, his tears can still easily hurt you, and you’ll also be deduced down to only one platform to dodge with.

If your health is already low, it can still be easy to lose at this point. But, this is where invincibility charms and supers will come in handy. After only 190 to 10 points, victory will be at hand. You’ve defeated the Devil and won the game!
