Curb Your Enthusiasm is known more for its characters’ wacky behavior than their smarts. However, Larry David and his friends often scheme when they’re up to no good, and their planning requires intelligence. Some characters like Larry David are clearly intelligent to fans, while others like Jeff Greene don’t seem brilliant right off the bat.

Some of Larry’s friends like Leon Black couldn’t deliver hysterical quotes in Curb Your Enthusiasm without a supple mind. The characters show their wits in their methodical deceptions, along with the mistakes they learn from throughout the series.

Marty Funkhouser

Marty is a good friend to Larry. However, his friendship with him reveals Marty’s less bright tendencies. While Marty is not deceptive like Larry, his kindness toward him underscores his weaknesses.

Marty remains friends with Larry after seeing the way he is. Larry crosses Marty when he steals from Marty’s mother’s memorial. He insults Marty when he steals his father’s golf club from his casket. Every time Larry does something like this and Marty is surprised, he seems more foolish.

Susie Greene

Susie is one of the funniest characters in the series. Her short temper and boisterous attitude make for some of the best episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. However, she proves to be less bright than her peers in her relationship with her husband Jeff.

Jeff consistently makes Susie look like a fool. Jeff is meticulous in his deception, but it appears every character in the series knows about his extramarital affairs except Susie. She isn’t stupid and shares her suspicions with Jeff several times. She even warns Jeff about divorcing him in one of Susie’s funniest Curb Your Enthusiasm scenes. However, her inability to see her husband as he truly is makes her seem less bright than her peers.

Richard Lewis

Richard Lewis is one of Larry’s oldest friends. He often has a new girlfriend who he believes is the love of his life. He meets Larry for frequent lunches, and his most significant arc revolves around his need for a kidney donor, a role that Larry avoids but ultimately takes on.

Richard doesn’t show his smarts too often in the series. His critical thinking seems weak when he repeatedly dives into relationships, thinking each new date will be a long-term partner after they first meet. Richard’s wits are put on display most clearly in his relationship with Larry, surprised at his failings after observing his behavior for over twenty years of friendship.

Leon Black

Leon is one of the silliest characters in Curb Your Enthusiasm and is known for his goofy behavior and funny remarks. However, fans shouldn’t mistake Leon’s goofiness for lack of intelligence. Leon shows his smarts in his interactions with Larry.

Leon is smart enough to dupe Larry into housing him against his will, first when Larry takes in his family after they lose their home in a Louisiana hurricane. Leon lives in L.A., but upgrades when he moves into Larry’s mansion. After his family moves on, Leon seamlessly slides into Larry’s life. However, Leon also gives Larry advice that proves to be ill-given, underscoring his less brilliant ideas.

Cheryl David

Cheryl is Larry’s on-and-off wife. She is pleasant and doesn’t stir the pot for Larry or his friends too often. However, she is consistently suspicious of Larry and his constant scheming. Cheryl shows her intelligence in her charity work.

She organizes events and uses her wits to contemplate possible errors and prepare for them. However, Cheryl’s love for Larry clouds her judgment, leading to the continual surprise of his bad behavior. Some fans say it makes no sense that Cheryl stays with Larry for so long in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Ted Danson

Ted acts almost as a villain for Larry. Others refer to Ted and Larry as friends, but they often seem to be enemies. Ted’s suspicion of Larry’s supposed good intentions presents his smarts to audiences. Ted often sees through Larry’s deception.

When Larry tries to innocently persuade Ted to switch his signature sandwich with him, Ted recognizes Larry is trying to pawn off his crummy sandwich. Part of the reason they act like enemies is because Ted is too smart for Larry’s perpetual deceptions of self-service.

Jeff Greene

Jeff shows his smarts in his critical thinking during work and in his personal life. He organizes several meetings and business operations for Larry singlehandedly in his position as manager. Outside of work, he shows his intelligence in his conniving behavior.

Jeff is consistently cheating on his wife Susie and lying to her. He even sleeps with his friend Marty’s sister in one of Jeff’s funniest Curb Your Enthusiasm scenes. He has to be quick on his feet as a result, coming up with lies on the fly and keeping track of his web of deceit. If Jeff wasn’t so smart, Susie would have left him long before she does.

Larry David

Larry may not be the most likable main character in Curb Your Enthusiasm but it’s hard not to see him as the most intelligent. Larry’s selfishness is so tenacious, his mind is forced to constantly contemplate how to avoid any inconvenience. He appears to come up with a new scam multiple times per day.

Larry competes with a coffee shop he doesn’t like by opening a café out of spite. Fans say one of Curb Your Enthusiasm’s darkest storylines occurs when Larry tries to trick his ex-wife’s therapist into liking him. Larry may be selfish, but he isn’t stupid.
