Cyberpunk 2077 drops in April 2020 before a plethora of excited players, but GameStop shoppers may have to look elsewhere to purchase this anticipated game.
Twitter threads and other sources are relaying the same message loud and clear: Cyberpunk 2077 is disappearing from GameStop order histories. Also included in this current list of “Missing Games” is Death Stranding, and Borderlands 3, but rationale behind why the pre-orders have disappeared still remains a mystery at this time.
With all of GameStop’s experience in the industry, one might hope that they could have had a situation like this well under control; unfortunately, this is far from the truth. Even the magic of Disney couldn’t save Kingdom Hearts 3 and GameStop from the same fate as Cyberpunk 2077. The case of that particular title, copies of the game were being sold faster than what GameStop actually had in their inventory. That becomes an obvious problem when GameStop promises exclusive content, and the orders themselves become unable to meet supply. That is just bad business, and bad business reflects reputation. GameStop is already on thin ice, and stuff like this doesn’t help.
Now, perhaps the case study of KH3 is applicable to Cyberpunk 2077, some still contend that pre-ordering games bring vices to the industry at large. Specifically, to some, the problem with pre-ordering games arises when software companies know they can rely on namesake brands than the actual substance and gameplay. This may be applicable when we consider Cyberpunk’s studio–CD Projekt Red, which has the highly-rated Witcher series in its portfolio. The amount of praise Keanu Reeves generally receives could arguably add some fuel to this fire as well.
Suffice to say, however, in a competitive gaming market, this seems like a simple crutch to fall back on with some surefire results; but it’s the players that truly pay the price for this type of compensation. Time may only tell if the gameplay lives up to consumer expectations.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be available next year on Xbox One, Playstation 4, Google Stadia, and Microsoft Windows.
