An official trailer for In the Tall Grass has arrived. Adapted from the horror novella by Stephen King and his novelist son Joe Hill, In the Tall Grass is the latest Netflix Original based on the horror icon King’s literature. The streamer has already released acclaimed film versions of his book Gerald’s Game and novella 1922, which bodes well for their efforts here. Indeed, In the Tall Grass is set to make its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2019 two weeks before its unveiling on Netflix in October – something that suggests the latter is confident about what they have.
Written and directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice), In the Tall Grass follows the siblings Becky (Laysla De Oliveira) and Cal (Avery Whitted) as they hear a young boy crying and venture into a field of tall grass to rescue him. Instead, they end up trapped in the field by a sinister force that cuts them off from not only the rest of the world, but also one another. With its Fantastic Fest debut just a few days away, Netflix is getting the film’s marketing campaign fully up and running today.
Netflix has now released the In the Tall Grass trailer online, following its poster and release date announcement late last week. Check it out, below.
In a way, the In the Tall Grass trailer is reminiscent of Natali’s breakout effort and feature debut on 1997’s Cube. His new film, like that cult classic, revolves around strangers placed in a seemingly endless maze where danger lurks around every corner, and death may be the only real means of escape (though even that’s not guaranteed, as evidenced by the ghostly boy that Becky and Cal encounter). The premise for King and Hill’s novella ought to play to Natali’s strengths as a horror filmmaker in that regard, judging by the claustrophobic sequences and glimpses of characters struggling to hold onto their sanity seen in the trailer. No doubt, In the Tall Grass will further benefit from a sturdy cast that includes up and comers like Oliveira (who also worked with Natali on the upcoming TV adaptation of Hill’s Locke & Key comic books), Picnic at Hanging Rock’s Harrison Gilbert, and Insidious and The Conjuring star Patrick Wilson as the characters trapped in the aforementioned field.
With IT Chapter Two currently playing in theaters and Doctor Sleep due to open in November, it continues to be a rewarding time for Stephen King fans, as far as the caliber of the films and TV shows based on his work goes. Netflix, for its part, seems quite happy to stay in both the Stephen King and Joe Hill business for the time being, having also picked up the Locke & Key TV show last year. It remains to be seen if In the Tall Grass in particular joins the list of good adaptations of the authors’ literature (either written together or solo), but the early signs are fairly promising.
