Altiera “Alt” Cunningham is one of Cyberpunk 2077’s best characters. She’s one of the most talented netrunners Night City has ever seen, pioneering the technology and programming that would eventually become Soulkiller. She’s also Johnny Silverhand’s ex-lover, and the inspiration for his crusade against Arasaka Corporation, resulting in the eventual downfall of the Night City legend. It’s safe to say that without Alt, there would be no Cyberpunk 2077, both because of her tumultuous history with its world and her direct influence over the game itself.

Alt is a netrunner who, at some point, was tagged by the ITS corporation to begin employment there, where she would hone her skills and begin to get interested in technology that could effectively transform humans into AI programs. She is also Johnny Silverhand’s ex-girlfriend, and even though their relationship was chaotic, it’s very clear the two cared deeply about each other – in Cyberpunk 2077 lore, Johnny attempts to take on Arasaka in two separate suicide missions, both motivated by either the rescue or avenging of Alt.
Alt Cunningham eventually designed Soulkiller and, unfortunately, this is what gets her noticed by Arasaka. Eventually, she is kidnapped by the company following an assault in an alleyway that Johnny is present for, and by the time Silverhand manages to find her, she’s already dead. However, she’s actually the first victim of Soulkiller, which means she’s a digital AI construct with Alt’s characteristics – the blueprint for what Johnny eventually becomes in V’s head. Alt, however, escapes to the wilds of the internet eventually, going beyond something called the Blackwall, a virtual construct meant to protect humanity from rogue AIs, which are each world-ending threats individually.
Alt Cunningham’s Role in Cyberpunk 2077
Alt Cunningham plays a major role in Cyberpunk 2077, but the extent of her involvement doesn’t become clear until later into the main campaign – and be warned, there are some major late game spoilers ahead. Alt Cunningham eventually resurfaces after hiding behind the Blackwall for decades because she senses Johnny’s presence during a deep dive of V’s own into cyberspace with the help of the Voodoo Boys. She agrees to help V, largely because she also believes she can assimilate the other minds that have been subjected to Soulkiller once she infiltrates Arasaka’s network. There’s the suggestion she still feels sentimental about Johnny, but its unclear how much this is true – and to what extent.
What is clear is that Alt Cunningham is freakishly powerful in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. She’s much more AI than human at this point, and her power in cyber space is astonishing – as evidenced by her ability to survive beyond the Blackwall with seemingly little trouble. She can easily dismiss the presence of anyone she doesn’t want around, and she believes she can use her own Soulkiller technique to help V, if that’s the route players choose. Unfortunately, this strength has come at the cost of her soul. She barely has any human traits or personality anymore, and her charismatic behavior is all but gone. Essentially, Alt Cunningham in Cyberpunk 2077 is like an entirely new species, and in a world that’s become increasingly ruled by technology, she may be at the top of the food chain.
