Dakota Johnson gave Olivia Colman, her co-star in The Lost Daughter, her very first tattoo. The Lost Daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, tells the story of Leda (Colman), a college professor who confronts the trauma of her past after encountering a woman and her daughter while on a beach vacation. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September but will release worldwide later in December.

Colman is well known for her powerful, awards-worthy performances, having now won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in 2019’s The Favourite and receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in The Father. Johnson, while not carrying the same awards reputation as Colman, is well known to audiences around the world for her role in the Fifty Shades trilogy, critically panned but immensely profitable films, and has since garnered additional popularity for a now-iconic interview on Ellen. Appearing alongside Colman and Johnson in the film are Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Paul Mescal.

As per Town & Country, Johnson and Colman apparently grew quite close during the filming of The Lost Daughter, so much so that Johnson actually gave Colman her very first tattoo. The pair celebrated the screening of the film at the New York Film Festival in October with a dance party at a club called Altro Paradiso in Soho, where they listened to “a lot of Talking Heads, the Cranberries,” according to Johnson. After their night of dancing, they returned to their hotel where Johnson gave Colman a tattoo using a stick-and-poke kit. Of the decision to get the tattoo, Colman says:

“Maybe it was me being completely seduced by this gorgeous person and wanting her to think I was cool. Or maybe it was my midlife crisis.”

Both Johnson and Colman appear to have formed a close bond while working on The Lost Daughter despite the film’s seemingly serious and emotionally-heavy subject matter. Colman, while frequently tackling serious roles, does clearly have a fun side, however, with the actor revealing several years ago that she can’t even remember the night she won her Oscar because she was too drunk. Although Colman and Johnson clearly don’t mind sharing the details of their celebratory escapades, both stars are keeping fans guessing when it comes to what the tattoo actually is.

Audiences may not have actually gotten to see The Lost Daughter yet but, if Johnson and Colman’s off-screen friendship is indicative of their on-screen chemistry in the film, moviegoers certainly seem to be in for a treat. The film is clearly sitting well with critics and currently has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Considering Colman’s recent track record with the Oscars, she may be finding herself nominated once more for Best Actress, and Johnson may well earn her first nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Audiences will have to wait to see The Lost Daughter when it releases in theaters on December 17 and then on Netflix on December 31.
