A new The Dark Knight Rises inspired cartoon shows Bane explaining wearing masks properly to Batman. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy has been touted by many as one of the greatest trilogies in the history of cinema. The film’s starring Christian Bale as Batman began in 2005 with Batman Begins, and the trilogy culminated in 2012 with The Dark Knight Rises when Bruce Wayne is forced to put on his Batman suit once again to save Gotham from the monstrous Bane.

Batman will next be in the hands of director Matt Reeves, as his The Batman is scheduled for an October 2021 theatrical release. However, despite it being eight years since The Dark Knight Rises’ release, the film has become a somewhat reoccurring theme in recent months, as the film, and most notably the Bane character, have been used as messages to try and encourage people to wear masks to combat the coronavirus. Batman fans swooped up replica Bane masks not long ago, thinking they would be appropriate face masks to keep them safe in public, and there was a fan-made video of Nolan’s films encouraging mask-wearing showing various characters, including Batman and Bane, all wearing their masks. However, there is a noticeable difference between Bane and Batman’s masks, and now Bane has had to explain this to Batman.

Little White Lies posted cartoonist David Squires’ new cartoon story on their Twitter account, and the rather amusing story flips the script on The Dark Knight Rises, with Bane being the ‘good guy,’ and Batman being the ‘bad guy.’ The story begins with Bane’s popular “darkness is your ally” speech before comically switching to Bane explaining to Batman that his mask is no good as he could spread his germs due to it not covering his mouth. Also, the cartoon hilariously includes Alfred, Scarecrow, and the Heath Ledger inspired Joker. Full cartoon and tweet can be seen below:

As coronavirus cases have spiked in the U.S, particularly in places like Florida, New York, and Texas, there has been a greater urgency to encourage mask-wearing. This Dark Knight Rises cartoon is another well constructed and humorous way of using pop culture to spread this message in hopes that everyone will begin to take caution. Unfortunately, the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus has even led to a new string of delays for big movie releases, including The Dark Knight Rises director’s latest film Tenet, temporarily leaving Nolan’s film without any release date. Many hoped Tenet would be the first big release back, and although theaters like AMC will still open, it’s not a positive sign considering a big film like Tenet cannot help entice people back to theaters.

Mask wearing is becoming more of a strict rule, as Disney World has even become stricter on guests to ensure they wear their masks when walking around the park. Of course, the hope for all is that with everybody wearing a mask when going out in public, it will limit the spread of the virus, and for film fans, this could mean big movies like Tenet getting theatrical releases sooner rather than later. Hopefully, in this instance, people will follow Bane’s lead in The Dark Knight Rises and wear a mouth covering mask.
